There is no object for a form that has not been experienced in other ways. It is not reasonable to say that there is an object for something that has no object, because there is no valid cognition. Others say that if the mind does not perceive, then the mind will not remember. Here, nothing other than the mind can: know and remember by itself. If, because of being different, what is grasped by sensory consciousness is not remembered by the mind, then what is grasped by conceptual thought will not be remembered either, because they are also different. If it is said to be because of the mind, then it can also be said to be because of knowledge. Therefore, sensory consciousness, arising from the immediately preceding condition, the mind holds other objects, therefore the blind cannot see. The mind produced by sensory consciousness, which acts together with the object immediately following its own object, is also manifest. If it arises simultaneously with sensory consciousness, then because it is grasped by sensory consciousness itself, the mind is meaningless. If the stream of sensory consciousness is interrupted, since there is no other object, what is this characteristic of? Here it is said: From habituation, for what is in front, whatever knowledge of "this is" etc., in order to manifest, for that, it is considered to be the direct perception of the mind. Entering in the manner of manifesting what is in front with "this is" is the direct perception of the mind. If it is said that what arises from the action of the eye itself is the consciousness of the eye, that is not so, because the consciousness of the eye is only closely needed for the appearance of form, while previous habituation is for certainty. Because there is no action of the eye in this, the mind arises from the characteristic of previous habituation. This is the direct perception of the mind. If it is thought that that form is grasped by the consciousness of the eye etc. itself, so the mind is meaningless, it is because there is a possibility of greater interest. This is entered through "this is". Therefore, because it is the way of entering, it is a valid cognition. If sensory consciousness does not enter, that is not so, because even in conceptual thought, it will enter from outside of very habituation. Therefore, such a mind is not an understanding of what was previously grasped, but arises after that time. It is also not a holding of what is grasped.

It is not clinging to what is grasped, because for one who abides, the previous clinging does not arise. If so, would two aspects be obtained at the same time? Is this not two aspects? If so, how can one cling to one? Just as two people with cataracts see two moons, there is no fault. However, the happiness and so on that arise from habituation, clinging to the aspect of being present in front, will also become the nature of mental direct perception. Then, will the happiness that arises from the senses, as it is called, disappear? Yes, that is what disappears. Because this has not disappeared, there is nothing to be done at all. If it is said that because happiness and non-happiness arise from the senses, that is contradictory, then here too it will contradict the words of the root teacher, because attachment, hatred, delusion, happiness, suffering, and so on, self-awareness does not depend on the senses, it is the direct perception of the mind. If so, then is it not the case that Dharmakirti's statement, "happiness and non-happiness that arise from the senses," is not established? The word "happiness" and so on refers to the cause of happiness, such as taste and so on, even though it does not discriminate, the sense consciousness appears as hot and sweet and so on. Or, because it is non-discriminating and in accordance with the Dharma, it is not contradictory to say that to the mind itself. If the mind clings to another aspect, and the sense consciousness also clings to another aspect, then would it become many aspects? No, it would become a fault for the sense consciousness as well. It is unavoidable that the sense consciousness also enters into many aspects, just like habituation. If that is the case, then is this consciousness of "this" also produced by the senses from habituation, and not the mind itself? Because other agents are also known. This "this" is done by the mind, because it is known as it is. Then, how is it that this consciousness of the mind, as "that," does not arise for hidden things? This is not good, because arising for hidden things does not arise through manifestation. Therefore, that is direct perception, how can it be determined to be? Direct perception.
