If not possessed, it is not a valid means of cognition. The Tathagata, the Bhagavan, possesses that. The Bhagavan is a valid means of cognition by nature of direct perception, which will be explained later. How is this understood? Therefore, it is said: For the purpose of averting what is not true, for the purpose of averting error, the Bhagavan spoke of truth. Because it is so, therefore he alone is omniscient, not others. Thus, it is also a valid means of cognition. Therefore, it is said: To depend on the proof is the nature of a valid means of cognition. Thus it is said, the Bhagavan himself is, but not the intellect. The intellect is not a valid means of cognition because it has no connection with meaning. This is a valid means of cognition because it speaks truthfully about the object of valid cognition. It will be explained to others. Or, it possesses the ultimate meaning, and the Bhagavan is also a valid means of cognition by realizing non-duality, but not by completely knowing all meanings, because completely knowing all meanings is a worldly term, so it is conventional truth. It is said thus: The non-dual vehicle is supreme. In the Ornament of the Commentary on Valid Cognition, the second chapter of the Commentary on the Establishment of Valid Cognition is completed. If direct perception and inference are not valid means of cognition, then the omniscient one is also not a valid means of cognition, then are the knowers such as Ishvara eternal? The eternal intellect is a valid means of cognition, so what is the use of seeking others? A permanent valid cognition does not exist, because the cognition of what exists is a valid cognition, and because the knowable is impermanent, it is also without reliance. Those who arise in succession, because it is unreasonable to arise from signs, because dependence is not allowed. A permanent, abiding valid cognition does not exist, because there is no valid cognition. Furthermore, the cognition of what exists is a valid cognition, not just anything. The object by which cognition becomes permanent is not permanent. Therefore, because the knowable is impermanent, it is also unstable. If the knowable is impermanent, then the knower is also impermanent, where do these come from? Acting on the nature of the knowable, or arising from the nature of the knowable, or its nature itself is a valid cognition, other aspects are impossible. In this

If there is no difference between doing and not doing, how can one distinguish between doing and the other? If it is said that it is like the position of a mirror, whichever object is close, that object appears. Then, the object itself changes in that way from its own collection, but it is not the action of the knower. If it is said that just as the eye opens without blinking and gradually sees the meaning that is shown, but other actions are different and nothing else can be understood, then, in this regard, it is explained: From following and returning, there the eye is also the actor. For the eternally existing independent one, there is no following and returning. Therefore, that which changes in that way is the object itself, because there is no grasping action here, how can it be a valid cognition? If it is said that it is the meaning of valid cognition, but because it is related to it, it is said to be known by it. That is unreasonable, like this: Relation is through following and preceding, return is through accomplishment. In the constant and unchanging, where can there be a relation? The constant and unchanging cannot be known to be close to anything. If it is said that because it sees, it is close. Then, why is it said that it sees, and not like that transcending and examining? If it exists in that way, because it arises, if it is said to be "it," because the sky and so on have it, how can it be the viewer? Because there is no indication of the sky's action, the sky is not the viewer. The indication is a word, therefore, from where does it want to obtain it? In all forms there is no return, therefore it cannot be understood as a cause. How can past and future things appear? Because the past is known, how can it become the past? The past and so on, in any case, move in the mirror. Such an appearance, if there is a mirror, will arise. Appearance is the result of examination, it has been said before. Why wouldn't the sky and so on become holders of that object? If there is no certainty of the immediate arising of that object, then, what word meaning should be said to be that which sees all things? The sounds that arise from seeing all things are all expressive.
