Isn't that which has the nature of two, etc., mistaken? If it is said that even what arises from an object is not entirely free from error, then that is not the object itself, because it is the cause that is able to create appearances. If that is the case, then that is not the sense faculty itself, because it is separated from the object. The sense faculty is separated. The sense faculty is separated, and that appears like a sense faculty. If that is the case, then, if it truly generates knowledge, the object has the ability like the sense faculty. Then why rely on both? That arising is not spoken of by it. If the object and the sense faculty are the same as the cause, why not name it from the perspective of the object? Those preconceived notions are not arbitrarily named or abandoned. In response to this, it is said, having seen what is understandable, the name is definitely applied. The name of the sense faculty has it. It should also be applied, that is its dharma. Taking and abandoning is done through what is understandable and what is not understandable. What is understandable also exists in the name of the sense faculty, whatever relies on the sense faculty, that is direct perception. The mistake caused by separation has already been refuted. Then, there is no mistake with the object either, because it is not the object. That is not so, if that is the object, how can the direct perception of others arise? The sense faculty itself is unique, there is no difference between existence and non-existence. Therefore, it is seen that naming is done in a non-common way, like the sound of a large drum and the sprout of barley, and so on. If one says the sprout of barley, one will not understand the sprout that is not barley. If one says the sprout of earth, that will also change. It is the same here. However, does "relying on the object" mean holding the nature of the object? If that is the case, only self-awareness will become direct perception, otherwise it will not be understandable. If it is said that the nature of the object, which is widely known in the world, is understood, if that is the case, relying on the sense faculty, being widely known in the world, this will also happen. What is special about fully examining other names? According to the treatises of the Sarvastivadins and others, the mental aspect of knowing.
