That nature of dharma which establishes the non-difference with the object, is to be apprehended by one valid cognition together with the subject of dharma. The state of being hidden is merely the emptiness of direct perception, therefore it does not depend on the apprehension of the subject of dharma. If direct perception does not apply to the hidden, then how does inference apply? This is not even a little, like this: Inference does not establish the hiddenness of that object. Even if it becomes manifest, it establishes the nature of what is seen. Whoever wants direct perception to apply to it, inference does not establish the hiddenness of the object. However, the hiddenness here is established by the direct perception of self-awareness, this has already been said. Even if the state of being hidden is established by direct perception, in reality, the characteristic of fire and so on, that is, the ability to perform a function, this should be established by inference, and for that, direct perception has already entered before. Therefore, the entry of inference is not contradictory. Furthermore, inference itself cannot realize its own nature, therefore, its hiddenness exists by its power. The fact that inference cannot enter its own nature is itself the state of being hidden, and here, it also changes at that time, therefore, it does not depend on the previous entry of valid cognition. Whoever depends on direct perception entering it, no one seeks meaning through the way of being hidden, it changes even if one does not want it. This also establishes what is completely established as valid cognition, if the hidden object is established, then this valid cognition is established, because the hidden object is established, it is related to it. Merely by being related to the object, knowledge is called valid cognition. The valid cognition that is related to the object, should arise from the sign. The rest has already been shown before, therefore it should not be said. If the object to be measured is two, then the object to be measured itself is two forms. The two objects to be measured are the cause, and the two valid cognitions are the result, then how does the result arise from the cause? Here it is said, because the collection exists.

Because the fruit will arise from the cause, therefore how can it be unreasonable that the fruit arises from the cause? If it is said that without eating, the cause will not possess the fruit, that seems reasonable. However, here, the fruit is indeed produced from the cause. From two measurable things, it is not always the case that two measuring tools can be established, but because there is a collection, we say so. The very existence of the collection should also be pointed out. Because two measurable things are established, undoubtedly two measuring tools will also be established, from which the definitive characteristics of these two are fully established, that is the measuring tool. It has been explained that one cannot establish two. When this is for the meaning of excluding three measuring tools and so on, because there is no other object, there is no distinction, therefore other false measuring tools are established. There is no measuring tool separate from the measurable thing, because if there is no measurable thing as one's own or another's nature, this knowledge will not exist, then what is the measuring tool? If it is said that oneself exists, if there is no measurable thing as one's own and another's nature, then it itself will not exist, therefore it will not become a measuring tool. Therefore, the object understood by one's own nature is one, and different from that is another, this is certain. The true thing is what can function, that is what truly exists here, the others are conventionally existing things, these are the explanation of the characteristics of self-essence and general essence. This is an intermediate verse. If it has no function at all, how can it become the characteristic of truly existing? For example, by functioning itself, who understands what? Knowledge and all that is knowable, such understanding does not exist. Whether it is permanent, impermanent, knowledge, or knowable, in the action or functioning itself, it cannot be understood by direct perception or inference. For example, because there is no establishment of reversal, permanent phenomena have no function. Because there is no establishment of accordance, impermanent phenomena have no function. Through accordance and reversal, it is understood that pervasion is function. In any case, if these are not established, how can function be spoken of? Permanent phenomena are all objects
