Therefore. Why does the nature of valid cognition reveal things in such a way? It is for the sake of how the very nature of valid cognition is accomplished from its revealing things themselves. Among them, direct perception is what the Bhagavan (bcom ldan 'das, Sanskrit: Bhagavān, Romanized Sanskrit: Bhagavān, literal Chinese meaning: World Honored One) has revealed, that a person with the knowledge of blue knows blue, but not blue itself, so it is said. Inference is also not to be rejected, therefore it is what is accepted. What arises from sound and so on can be rejected, all other good speakers should be abandoned, only what I alone say is correct, so it is said. Or, for the nature of inference for the sake of others, there exists the revealed combination. As it is said, whatever has the nature of arising even a little, all of that is of the nature of ceasing, so it is said. That itself says: That which has the nature of not arising without, is the basis of inference. In order to show the established, the reason, and the pervasion, therefore it is also clearly explained. Understanding the reason pervaded by the established, and the pervasion of the reason, that is, whatever is a little, anything that has the nature of arising even a little, all of that is of the nature of ceasing, so the Bhagavan showed in various ways. Therefore, inference is also spoken by the Buddha, the very nature of valid cognition was first shown by the Bhagavan, and it is valid cognition. Therefore, the valid cognition itself that was first mentioned is the supreme quality of the Bhagavan. Why is it that the reality of valid cognition with two qualities is shown by the Bhagavan Tathagata, therefore, there is no other valid cognition other than this, from this Tathagata, everything is accomplished. In the Ornament of Explanation of Valid Cognition, the first chapter is called "Establishment of Valid Cognition." Having thus spoken of the general nature, the specific nature is explained. Direct perception and inference are valid cognition. That valid cognition is non-deceptive. Non-deception also arises from meaning, therefore it is not confused about meaning. If it is not confused about meaning itself, how should it be known? That is, by direct perception and inference themselves. Because it is direct perception, and because it is inference, it is not valid cognition, but it is other than what arises from sound and so on.

It means that it is not so. If it is said that sounds and the like are not related to meaning, then why is that? Like this, the two characteristics are the measurable, and the valid cognition is because there is no confusion about the measurable. If there is no measurable, then it will not be without confusion about the measurable. The measurable can only be understood through direct perception and inference, because there is no other measurable that is other than the characteristics of self and generality, that is what is said. The characteristic of self is the object of direct perception, and the characteristic of generality is the object of inference, this will be shown. To show this, the verse says: Because there are two measurable, there are two valid cognitions, Because of being able to do and not being able to do. Hair combs and the like are not meaningful, Because there is no desire for meaning. Through the distinction of direct perception and inference, valid cognition can only be understood as two types, if it is not like that, then it is not appropriate to understand the measurable. The verse says: Direct and inferential are the measurable, There is no knowledge other than these two. Therefore, other than these two, It is not accepted that there is a valid cognition. Only direct perception and inference are the measurable that is known without error, and not others, because they are the nature of generality and particularity, so there is no other way of knowing. Even the same object will become two types, because there are two ways of knowing. The distinction of knowing is also the distinction of valid cognition, and that itself is the distinction of the object. If it is said how does the difference in knowing become the difference in the object? Is it because others are different, so others will also become different? That is true, the verse says: The difference of a horse does not change the nature of a cow, Because there is no connection, it is like that. But for knowledge and the knowable, It is not like that, the establishment of things being existent or non-existent, Depends on knowledge, because of other knowledge, that thing, Is also known as another thing. When it is realized that generating knowledge has direct ability, then that is the characteristic of self, because it is marked by its own nature. When it is realized that having ability is through indirect means, then that is the characteristic of generality, because it is marked by the nature of generality.
