The cause of earth is the object of various consciousnesses. Therefore, the nature of consciousness is to realize its own nature, while the nature of the object is to be realized as it is. Therefore, the object is the nature of impermanence and selflessness, etc. Holding such a nature is the nature of consciousness, and others are not its nature. It is said: "Self-nature is this, from this it arises, other conditions cause it to change, cessation also depends on conditions, not relying on illusory wisdom." Whatever is the essence of holding the nature of selflessness, etc., that is self-nature. Deviation from it is due to sudden, rootless causes. Even the deviation itself, returning from the deviation, depends on conditions. Therefore, because it is rootless, it is not dependent, like the wisdom of a phantom snake. If it is said that the cause of a rope turning into the wisdom of a snake is similarity and distance, etc., then what is the cause for the wisdom of permanence? Direct perception does not enter into permanence, nor does inference. Without valid cognition, there is no doubt. Direct perception can also establish momentariness. Then, from where does one grasp permanence? This is explained: "Even though impermanence is clearly seen, the mind, due to seeing existence, is deceived by doubting that it is always there, or is deluded by different appearances, and therefore cannot understand, because it is certain of the later moment." This can be said: When the nature of a thing itself is observed, and later not observed, then impermanence is seen. Its state of non-existence is called impermanence. However, even if it is no longer observed, the dull mind cannot escape doubt. Therefore, because of doubting that it still exists, one doubts whether it still exists, that is, whether the previous thing still exists now. Therefore, because one obtains function from what is seen later, one is not deceived and therefore cannot understand. Because one is deceived by not obtaining function, one will understand, like a broken pot. If the characteristic of having function is observed, then what opportunity is there to think of reversing the conventional terms?

It is only those who contemplate that are determined solely by different appearances. Those who engage in worldly activities and pursue goals do not further discriminate because they are completely satisfied by achieving the goal, for the goal has already been accomplished. Alternatively, being deceived by other similarities, the thought arises that the similarity is the thing itself, like twins and illusions. In the former case, it is merely stated that for those phenomena where fire arises from different things such as grass, and there is particular attachment to it as being the same fire, there is no deception in achieving the goal. What is taken close to it is the firewood itself, not the fire. It is not produced from the fire, for that would lead to the initial non-production of fire, since it does not exist prior to striking the flint. Or, it arises from non-existence itself. Similarly, all things arise from the preceding homogeneous cause, or not from a heterogeneous cause, but from the lord of karma. It is for this very reason that, considering this meaning, the examination of other aspects is done with "or." Among these, the statement of the karmavadins explains the former, while the view of others is like the latter, this is certain. Or, because there is no doubt about the existence of things, it is said to be "deceived," for there is no doubt about the existence of things, because their existence is always perceived. If it is not perceived, there will be doubt about the existence of things. When it is not perceived at all, how does the situation remain? There, too, it is because of being deceived by other similarities, like hair and nails that grow again after being cut. If it is said that it is the same because the destruction is recognized, that is not correct, because recognition is not a valid measure, since direct perception and inference are not reasonable. This will also be explained later. Therefore, due to the defilement of inner ignorance, the stains are all adventitious. It is for this very reason that it is said: The nature of this mind is luminosity, it is separate from permanence, and therefore it clings to it. The stains are adventitious. False imputation, which is not true, is merely foolish because it is rootless. The sacred scripture is that there is no appearance of permanence at any time, therefore
