It is for that reason. The meaning of that is the teacher's. The treatise that represents the valid cognition of direct perception and inference is: the treatise on the nature of valid cognition, called "Compendium on Valid Cognition." In order to subdue the enemies of the heretics and protect from ignorance, it is a treatise with the nature of definitive words. It is also the teacher's, and it is also a treatise on the nature of valid cognition, therefore it is called a special collection. Although there are commentaries on the Vinaya, etc., by the teacher, they are not treatises on the nature of valid cognition. Although there are treatises on the nature of valid cognition made by others, they are not by the teacher. Therefore, both are mentioned. After eliminating the bad explanations of the previous commentaries and the bad arguments of the heretics, the special explanation is the explanation. The cause of that is inference. In this way, the explanation is that which has the nature of distinguishing between meaning and non-meaning. The basis of that is also inference, because it is with conceptualization. Therefore, because it has become a means, that itself is established first. If the teacher Dignāga made the nature of inference, even so, there is no fault in thoroughly agitating and establishing it. In the first chapter of the Pramāṇavārttika, after meaningfully explaining the chapter on inference for oneself in the Compendium on Valid Cognition by answering bad arguments, regarding the argument of why it was made by skipping the order, therefore, the teacher's words, etc., were spoken. The treatise that represents the aggregates, elements, and sources is the treatise on nature. Because it is non-deceptive, valid cognition is also that, and it is also a treatise on nature, therefore it is a treatise on the nature of valid cognition, which is the meaning of the Buddha's words. The cause of that explanation is the cause of the explanation of the treatise on the nature of valid cognition. It is also the teacher's, and it is also the cause of the explanation of the treatise on the nature of valid cognition, therefore it is called karma-holding. What is that? It is inference, inference.

Therefore, the chapter on inference for oneself in the Compendium of Valid Cognition is inference. Thus, because of relying on inference, the teachings of the Blessed One are reasonable, but not those of other non-Buddhists, this will be explained. As such, what is said is another way. Inference is also divided into the chapter on inference for oneself, therefore, the chapter on inference for oneself in the Compendium of Valid Cognition is precisely what was previously explained through refutation. The term "valid cognition" and so forth refers to "valid cognition, the non-deceptive" and so forth. To this, the author himself composed a commentary in verses, and in explaining "having become valid cognition," the word "having become" means "to become." Valid cognition is it, and becoming is also it, therefore it is "having become valid cognition." Thus, valid cognition is always a clear awareness. Direct perception and inference are valid cognition, therefore, how could the Blessed One not be of that nature? Therefore, it is said, "similar to valid cognition, therefore it is valid cognition," meaning that the sound of valid cognition has the nature of a simile. If the Blessed One is of the nature of immaculate, non-conceptual, and unerring wisdom, accomplished through the power of meditation,

That is it. Merely having the knowledge called "possessing infallible validity" will not be attained, because the object is also infallible. Therefore, "knowledge" is mentioned. To indicate that point, it is said that "infallibility also enters after completely determining the meaning," and so on. Infallibility should also be combined with "the dharma of the object." When will this change occur? It is said, "Entering after completely determining the meaning." It should be considered that it is completely determined by two valid cognitions as appropriate. Direct perception, because it is non-conceptual, although it is not certain, it is merely arising as it appears there. Inference is certain. If direct perception, because it is without conceptualization, cannot distinguish whether water and so on are true or false, then how can it enter after completely excluding meaning from it? It is said that there are two kinds of entry based on direct perception: the initial and the habitual. Among them, for those who have habituation, when a very habitual and clear direct perception arises, just like that, because it has abandoned the cause of habitual confusion, it arises with complete certainty, and because it generates subsequent certainty, it causes a person to enter. Therefore, for that point, in order to make oneself a valid cognition, because it does not depend on the subsequent entry of valid cognition, the statement "after completely determining the meaning" is not unreasonable. Not all direct perceptions establish others as valid cognitions. For the initial entry, because the reason is not grasped with certainty, it enters through doubt. If so, then how is the statement "after completely determining the meaning" appropriate? It has already been said that merely arising in that way is what establishes the name. If one enters through doubt, then how is it said to be "preceded by conceptualization"? What contradiction is there in this? Only that which enters through certainty is not preceded by conceptualization. Thus, in entering, there are two causes: doubt about the meaning and certainty about the meaning. The opposite is also meaningless.
