As it is said and so on. That which is established by that proponent is called 'with remainder'. Why? Because it is erroneous. Like what? As it is said, 'similar in taste' and so on. Although the fruit has not been tasted, it is similar in taste, meaning it is the same as having tasted it. Because it is the same in nature as that which has been tasted, this is the reason. Although the fruit's ripening has been seen, because it is contained in one vessel, it is like seeing the fruit ripened, so it is like ripening in one vessel as well. Just as those two inferences are with remainder, so too are the statements made by the examiners. Because of the similarity in nature, one should think the taste is the same, and because it is contained in one vessel, one should think all the fruits are ripe. What certainty is there in this? Likewise, because the slight existence of the Vedas is of true meaning, everything in the Vedas will change in the same way. What is there that is without error in this? The teacher Dignāga, who knows the reasoning in this way, the inference with remainder is abandoned from the *Compendium of Valid Cognition*. The teacher and so on will explain, the teacher himself said that the inference with remainder is not that which establishes, it will be connected with what is to be explained. Where is it said? As it is said, 'logicians' and so on, in the *Compendium of Valid Cognition*, wherever logicians establish an inference with remainder, that is where the error is shown. Like what? For example, as it is said and so on, for example, with similarity in nature as the cause, although the fruits have not been tasted, it is like establishing that the fruit is the same in taste as having tasted it. With the reason 'because it is contained in one vessel', it is like seeing, like establishing that the fruit is ripe when it is not ripe with the example of the fruit and so on being completely ripe and the same as seeing. That is not the reasoning that establishes, likewise, the inference with remainder, that is also not the reasoning that establishes. Whatever is merely unseen

As stated earlier with "that which thoroughly shows the opposite." If asked whether the characteristic of authority, according to the school of Dignāga, is not precisely that it is unerring in one aspect, as stated by "trustworthy words are not deceptive, general statements and inferences," then it is stated with "the characteristic of authority is": the characteristic of authority, being of the nature of unerring in one aspect, we cannot rely on the individual as an authority of valid cognition, as has been discussed in that context. The characteristic of authority, such as unerring in one aspect, is not merely based on the existence of a single, highly renowned object; however, the characteristic of authority, being the valid cognition that sees the other shore, is capable of discerning whatever is not capable of completely severing all objects. Where is it capable of discerning? The words should be connected in this way. If, as its own nature, it is established by valid cognition and is a pure inference, then this treatise is the very perception of those who desire to manifest as the object of direct perception, just as the wisdom and so forth of the Buddhist schools. For those who desire to manifest as the object of inference without relying on authority, it is the very object of inference that enters by the power of things, such as the truth of suffering and so forth. Those who desire to manifest as the object of inference without relying on authority are also of such a nature. The three kinds of objects are established as existing by valid cognition, as their own nature. Speech that does not desire to manifest as the object of valid cognition, such as direct perception, is not direct perception and so forth, but is established as negated by valid cognition as its own nature. Thus, if establishment and negation are pure, then for the remaining extremely obscure meanings, if there are no words, they will not arise; if there is no connection, it is still reasonable for a person to enter into doubt without opportunity. The term "in that" refers to the authority of one who is capable of discernment and has an unerring view of all things. Why? Because such an authority has the possibility of being unerring at some time. Otherwise,
