Therefore, it is impossible to distinguish between mantras and non-mantras by direct perception. If someone says, then, does that mean that achievers who see hidden things do not exist? That is why it is said, "By this," and so on. What is meant by "by this" is that this sequence of letters can have the effect of eliminating poisons, etc., while this sequence of letters, "by this," cannot. In this way, it is impossible to know from signs. Why? Because the distinction between mantras and non-mantras, where the difference in their signs is not confused, is not established. Because letters are to be understood by the direct perception of ordinary people, and mantras and non-mantras have that nature. If it is necessary to determine through the direct perception of ordinary people, then what is the use of examining those who see supersensory things? Therefore, it is said, "By direct perception," and so on. Because letters themselves are direct perception, even through direct perception, mantras and non-mantras are not indicated as "this is a mantra, this is not a mantra," that is, they are not spoken of in that way. Because there is no complete understanding, it is impossible to determine, "This can eliminate poison, this cannot." Even if the poison is seen, because it is not understood, its killing power cannot be determined. If it is said that mantras and non-mantras can be determined from the teachings, then it is said, "Even if it has been taught." If someone teaches that this mantra produces such and such a result, even then, it is so. Because in any case, the distinction of the nature of mantras is not understood. Because the teacher is also just an ordinary person. If the difference between mantras and non-mantras cannot be understood, then on whom or on whose teachings should one rely to determine it? One should think in this way. Otherwise, because the result is not deceptive, when the result that a certain mantra should accomplish is known, then that mantra can be determined. And the result that a mantra should accomplish cannot be seen before it is done, that is, before the mantra is done diligently. Because at that time, it does not exist.

Thus it is thought. Mantras are not definite, And there are no practitioners who diligently practice mantras. Therefore, if there are individuals who see meanings beyond the senses, saying that there is a discriminating wisdom between mantras and non-mantras, even if one does not desire this, it should be accepted by the wise. It is also unreasonable to assert and say that mantras inherently possess the ability to produce results. To show this, the order and so on are mentioned. This order of knowing mantras, what is called "inherently," refers to the ability of things, the action of removing poison and so on. Although it is not a cause, it comes from the expression of individuals. Why? Because the mantra of some diligent practitioners is quickly accomplished; and the mantra's activity, the same as diligent practice, takes a long time to accomplish for others. If results are produced inherently, there should be no difference in time, because obtaining the nature of the mantra is the same for all individuals. The accomplishment of results from the mantras of other individuals depends on asceticism and so on, asceticism being the determination of fasting spoken from the realization of the mantra. Among them, practice is diligent practice. The word "etc." includes the ritual of the mantra, fire offerings, and so on. If results are produced inherently, then what is the need to rely on diligent practice of asceticism and so on? Because the mantra is constant, it cannot be differentiated by diligent practice of asceticism and so on. Thus, the object of the mantra, the activities of recitation and fire offerings, and so on, even if the rituals of some individuals are the same diligent practice in one activity, because one sees meaning and the other sees no meaning, it is not inherently producing results. If results are produced inherently, then it should be the same with meaning. Mantras can do things, although they can remove poison and so on, but at other times, what is done by the same individual is the cause of deceiving certain results, this reason is real.
