That which is called "taste" refers to the meaning of language. If there is no movement of the lips, etc., and only the mantra is thought of in this mind, that is mental recitation. The word "or" means to gather, and mental recitation becomes meaningless. Why? Because sound is the object of the ear, and sound itself is what should be heard by the ear, and the nature of sound is also mantra. Whispering and mental recitation are not audible to the ear, so they are not sound itself, and since they are not sound itself, they are not mantra itself. If it is not a mantra, how can recitation have results? This is the meaning of language. Because it is to be heard, it is hearing, which means that it should be heard by the ear. Whatever has the characteristic of sound itself should be called that. If one recites from there, it would be too much, because apart from the sound that should be heard by the ear, if mental recitation, etc., which are of the nature of consciousness, are considered to be sound itself, then tastes, etc., would also become sound. The author of the treatise says, "Only the object of the ear is sound." To this definite view, others refute, saying, "Only sound is the object of the ear." From this definite view to saying it is too much, etc. If that is the case, if the object of the ear is the nature of sound, then wouldn't the totality of sound itself be too much to be the nature of sound? The so-called sound, etc., is the declaration of an established tenet. It is not said that only sound is the object of the ear, but it is said that sound undoubtedly has that characteristic. Why? Because for sound, there is no other characteristic than that which should be heard by the ear. If, for the characteristic of sound, someone thinks that any practitioner, any mantra of the nature of sound that has results, is the cause of manifestation, that is, the cause of consciousness that holds the nature of sound itself, then for the unmanifest, audible object, that is, for those actions that exist with the sound of the unmanifest, audible object, the words should be combined in this way. The practitioner, that is, the author, only produces those actions by moving the lips, etc., and then whispers.

Muttering is not endowed with the fruit of mantra, and mental recitation is also not endowed with the fruit of mantra. Thus, at that time, during whispering and mental recitation, the function of the ear does not at all ascertain or grasp the meaning of the word "sound." If it is said that mental recitation is also mantra, then "sound" and so on are mentioned. Mental conceptualization, which is not of the nature of sound, is also not mantra, because it is asserted that it is to be grasped by the ear faculty, is not made by a person, and is permanent. Conceptualization is the opposite of that. "Transmission" and so on are to meet the doubts of others' thoughts. In any case, during whispering and mental recitation, if that intelligence is clear, that is, the intelligence that manifests mantra is the clarity of that sound, that is, knowledge. Why? Because it arises from it through transmission, that is, it arises from sound. Thus, the knowledge of that sound, the one that arose earlier, through a well-assembled sequence, the appearance of sound will arise in mental recitation. "By mind" and so on is to explain that even if the reciter thinks with the mind, there is no hearing of sound, and there is no intelligence that manifests mantra except for hearing sound. Therefore, it arises from sound, that is, it arises from sound. At the time of mental recitation, that intelligence is also the clarity of sound, that is, the knowledge of sound. Therefore, because it is the nature of mantra, it is thought that the practitioner of mental recitation and so on will show the fruit. Thus, if it is mantra itself through transmission, then it will be endless. To show that, "from sound" and so on are mentioned, that is, the conceptualization of meaning from the sound of the characteristic of mantra is the conceptualization of the meaning of sound. Thus, when saying "svāhā to fire (藏文:མེ་ལ་སྭཱ་ཧཱ།,梵文天城体:अग्नये स्वाहा,梵文罗马拟音:agnaye svāhā,汉语字面意思:献给火)", some conceptualizations will arise, such as "this is of the nature of burning and brightness, etc." Those also arise from sound through transmission, so those conceptualizations are also like that.
