Thus it is said. Here, the connection is of two kinds, namely through affirmation and negation. Of these, first, affirmation is that whatever term, which has prior conceptualization, the sound that is applied to it will only make one understand that term. For example, for the terms 'sound of a drum' and 'barley sprout,' one will definitely connect the sounds 'drum' and 'barley.' For this term 'sense consciousness' as well, one must definitely connect the sound that has prior conceptualization, which is the reason of its own nature. The very act of making understood also abides in being solely the term 'sense.' Through negation as well, whatever does not change the very act of making understood, then it is not suitable to be necessarily connected to it. For example, for the terms 'sound of a drum' and 'barley sprout,' the sound of a stick and the sound of earth, etc., do not change in sequence. In the context of showing the consciousness of the senses, it will also not become making understood for the term of the sound of an object, which is the non-observation of the pervader. Wherefore, from 'its dharma is also necessarily connected, pervaded by making understood,' up to 'the sign of own-nature is necessarily connected,' this treatise explains the connection that establishes affirmation. Of making understood, the sign of own-nature is necessarily connected. The meaning is that the sign of the nature of making understood, which is to be established, is to be connected. If the sign of own-nature that is necessarily connected reverses, etc., then for negation, the reason is to show the target. For that very reason, if that is the case, it is the explanation of the term of making understood, and not the understanding of the meaning that is relevant to the occasion, not by others, etc., it shows the two results of the establishment of the two connections of the establishment of affirmation and negation. In the *Compendium on Valid Cognition*, from the perspective of affirmation, it explains the connection with one's own sound, and also sees the application of terms in a unique way, for example, it shows the sound of a large drum and barley sprouts, etc. Therein, the meaning is thus: the meaning that those with prior conceptualization want to express.

The so-called terms seen by the teacher refer to understanding through the means of unique understanding. Therefore, understanding itself is to be proven. The connection through negation also indirectly indicates this. Thus, for the word "also" in "also through the unique aspect," it is necessary to be certain. Through the unique aspect alone, not through the common aspect, this result of certainty clearly shows that not understanding is necessarily to be combined. Then, how does one explain the teachings of the Compendium on Valid Cognition (Pramāṇasamuccaya) through "the five consciousnesses," etc., and explain "collection" etc. by making connections? If this teaching is separated from direct perception and conceptual thought, then how is it shown by the section "the objects of the five consciousnesses, such as the eye, are collections"? The aggregation of atoms is a collection, and that is the common essence of all aggregates, and because it is the object, the consciousness of the senses is indeed with conceptual thought, so others think. If it is not one consciousness, how is that possible? This is also a teaching from the Compendium on Valid Cognition. If the collection is not one conceptual thought, then how is the object of the five consciousnesses a collection? Connect this with this. For the self-character of the aggregates, those with objects of self-character are considered to be the collection of the five consciousnesses, but not the self-character of matter, this statement is also the earlier view of the Compendium on Valid Cognition, because it contradicts non-conceptual thought. The teacher Vasubandhu also explains alternately through "also," etc. At some times, from among blue and yellow, etc., through the determination of each of blue, etc., eye consciousness, etc. will arise. At some times, through the collection of blue and yellow, etc., such distinctions are made in the Abhidharma teachings. If the collection of form and sound, etc. is the object of the collection of the five consciousnesses, then how are they
