Umāpa. Regarding "because direct perception is one in relation to the other," etc. Direct perception is what was seen before, and the 'other' is what is later apprehended through the distinction of 'this is that.' It means that whatever is established in one is also established in both. "Because there are no three modes" means that if there is no following from the perspective of distinction in the perception of difference, then without following, how can there be three modes? "Seeing objects, etc., and familiarity, all are expressions, etc." is a negation. "Objects, etc., are not signs of its non-erroneousness" means that memory also arises from the perspective of objects, etc., as previously stated, so it is not a sign of recognition itself. Therefore, memory arises in dependence on some external objects. Furthermore, "objects, etc., are not signs of its non-erroneousness" means that even without memory of objects, etc., recognition arises from some similar efforts. Therefore, memory also has the reason of depending on internal and external causes, and in that way, recognition and memory are not contradictory. Therefore, if what was said before becomes memory, etc., it is erroneous. "The defining characteristic has been shown" means that direct perception is the very basis to be defined. Because direct perception is to be defined by the characteristic of "being free from conceptualization." For that very reason, having shown freedom from conceptualization, it shows direct perception itself, saying that knowledge free from conceptualization is called direct perception, because it is the relationship between name and named. "Free from conceptualization" means separated and liberated, which is the fifth puruṣa, meaning separated and liberated. Here, "having freedom from conceptualization" is polysemous. "Separated by conceptualization" is the third collection. "Each is known by itself" means that it is taught in one's own treatise following the path of knowledge. "By another's knowledge" means by another's treatise, because the other wishes to experience knowledge through another.

When conceptual thought arises from sound, the so-called "having a basis for names" refers to showing other meanings. When sound arises from conceptual thought, the so-called "basis for names" refers to that person of the sixth category. So, what is this kind of transformation? It mentions that conceptual thought is expressible and mixable, etc. The so-called "having the common aspect of conceptual thought" is the meaning of summarizing. Only the common aspect appears mixable when expressed, but not its own self-aspect. The so-called "by this" refers to the nature of the immediately preceding conceptual thought. The so-called "in seeing" refers to experience, even if it appears as two, it is because the expressible and mixable do not appear. This is the occasion of saying "it is not to establish non-existence with this." Furthermore, in the determination of valid cognition, Therefore, it is different from that, That object is also without an object, Therefore, this non-object is, Established by direct perception itself. Etc., has already been analyzed. Establishing the eye's consciousness itself as proximate, it is called the eye. Therefore, the so-called "of the eye" is an explanation of it, that is, what is the root consciousness of the eye. Or, "by the eye" itself is the instrumental third case, that is, what is the root consciousness of the eye, taking it out from within and speaking. In the manner of the eye being the agent, using the root consciousness of the eye to look at form, that is the consciousness born from the sense faculty, this is the meaning of the words. Also, a little bit of conceptual thought, my conceptual thought will become like that. Etc., when remembering the past state of mind, remembering in what state conceptual thought arises, at that time my conceptual thought will become like that, like this it will be recognized by the consciousness of memory. Therefore, conceptual thought itself recognizes, and remembers as how it recognizes, so it will become conceptual thought, because it is impossible to remember what has not been experienced. Experience is also through self-awareness, but not through other consciousness, because it would become an infinite fault.

That is why. Even in the state of gathering thoughts, it is so. When sensory consciousness transforms into thoughts, one will remember knowing and how one knows. That itself is, it is said, if that sensory consciousness is that. "Previously also" means that even in the state of gathering thoughts, it will be determined by recognition and the memory of the state arising from its power. "Previously said," and so on, indicates negation. The explanation of "previously said state" is: it is called the state of gathering thoughts. "If it is grasped by the consciousness mixed with that name," means that for whatever meaning the sound is applied to, the consciousness that wants to grasp it as an object mixed with that name will grasp it. Because the meaning without sound applied is mixed with speech, it cannot be grasped. "If this is applied," refers to sound. Transformation means that if the general characteristic of desire becomes a thing, that is, exists, and that should also be grasped by sensory consciousness, then because sound is also applied to that, sensory consciousness will become mixed with speech. In that case, since sound is not applied to one's own characteristic, if it is said that this is proof for what is established, then, therefore, it is also said that because one promises to apply sound to the general characteristic, and so on. "The previous own treatise has been established," means "seeing in one difference," and so on. The meaning of the sound appearing in the consciousness of seeing means appearing in the consciousness of experience, which means the nature of one's own characteristic. "It is not applied to those," means that it is not applied to the meaning of the sound appearing in the consciousness of seeing. Because it is the object of each determination, it means because it is the object of one's own characteristic. "Because there is no knowledge of connection for those, because there is no grasping," means because one's own characteristic does not appear to the consciousness of the nature of discernment. "This" refers to meaning. "The sound and meaning of horse," and so on, "the sound and meaning of horse," and so on, are separated.
