Because one is uncertain about the light of a jewel, even if the light of a jewel produces the illusion of a jewel, it is a valid cognition because it does not deceive the actual jewel. Therefore, because it does not deceive, it is a valid cognition, this general characteristic of valid cognition exists in the illusion of a jewel in the light of a jewel. Therefore, it itself is a valid cognition. If that is the case, then a third valid cognition other than direct perception and inference will be obtained. Like this, for the time being, the illusion of a jewel in the light of a jewel is not direct perception, because it is an illusion and because it is accompanied by conceptual thought. Moreover, direct perception is the opposite of this. It is also not inference, because it does not arise from a sign. Nor is it not a valid cognition, because it does not deceive the object. If one says this, what is said here does not become another valid cognition, because it is included within inference itself. Therefore, the general characteristic of inference is this: the cognition that arises from the relation of another hidden object is inference, which will be determined immediately afterwards. Here also, from the relation of a jewel to the light of a jewel, from its result, the illusion of a jewel will arise in that light of a jewel. Therefore, because it arises from the sign of the result, it is itself inference. Therefore, first, eye consciousness will arise for the light of a jewel, because one's own characteristic is the sign, therefore one will recognize the nature of the sign of the result. As it is said, in order to understand the meaning of things, the ability to state the subject and reason is meaningless. Therefore, it exists as that which makes one understand its own nature and what arises from it, but it does not become the nature of the sign that is universally contemplated by others and what arises from it. If one asks, how does one follow with one's own characteristic? One does not say "it itself", but the characteristic of its own kind is different. Saying thus, its own kind is also not that which one wants to specifically explain.

Therefore, the self-characteristic of similarity is called the general characteristic that is different from dissimilar kinds, etc. For anything, being established as distinct due to the opposite of being made, etc., the distinction between dharma and dharmin is a way of indicating to the ignorant, but what makes it understood is only the self-characteristic of the sign. It is said that the difference between dharma and dharmin is made by the mind, but it is not the actual meaning. From the sign of smoke, the knowledge of the sign-possessor arises, it is not that one clings to the smoke itself and thinks it is fire. What is it then? It is another place. If one mistakes a jewel, doesn't one cling to the sign called the light of the jewel and think it is a jewel? What will happen from that? Just by this, the very nature of arising from connection is not damaged. Here, it should be said that the confusion about the object is more serious. Although merely encountering a jewel in that direction does not make it a valid cognition, who can prevent it from being an inference if it merely encounters a jewel? They believe that all inferences are mistaken. If there is no memory of following and reversing when mistaking a jewel, if there is only no memory of following and reversing, then it is not that it is not an inference. Because even if there is no memory of following and reversing, when fire is known from smoke, don't you think that what is known is inferential knowledge? If it is born from a sign with three aspects, then it is merely an inference. If mistaking the light of a jewel for a jewel is an inference, then how is inference established as a valid cognition? Examples are given with "the light of a jewel lamp," etc. In order to establish that inference in general is not deceptive, it is not reasonable to use inference itself as an example. This is not a fault, because in this way, even if mistaking a jewel is a mistake, it is only considered to be non-deceptive about the object. And the inference arising from signs such as smoke is non-mistaken and appears as an object.
