It is so. Similarity itself is the cause of similarity. If it were not so, by establishing difference and non-difference, it would become causeless. Therefore, the mind itself, which is different from the four elements, is also produced by the similar proximate cause. Since these four elements themselves exist without difference, they are also made by the dissimilar similar proximate cause. According to another view, if the mind arises from the proximate cause of non-consciousness, then what arises will be the same as what arises later, and will become the nature of non-consciousness. Because from cow dung, etc., arise shaluka, etc., isn't the second proximate cause seen? That is just an unexamined statement. Therefore, for the time being, some particularists think that cow dung is not the proximate cause, but the subtle particles of shaluka brought by it. The Samkhyas also believe that from the cow dung, which has the nature of three गुण (Tibetan: ཡོན་ཏན།, Sanskrit Devanagari: गुण, Sanskrit Romanization: guṇa, Chinese literal meaning: गुण) qualities, the substance of shaluka, which has the nature of three गुण (Tibetan: ཡོན་ཏན།, Sanskrit Devanagari: गुण, Sanskrit Romanization: guṇa, Chinese literal meaning: गुण) qualities, will arise. The treatises of the Vaibhashikas, etc., also say that the so-called cow dung, etc., is not a single substance, but is composed of eight substances such as form, smell, taste, and touch. Among them, from the proximate cause of form, form arises, and similarly, from taste, taste arises, so it seems that similarity is the proximate cause. Similarly, those who only speak of the four elements also become the four elements, so it seems that it does not arise from the proximate cause of non-similarity. For the Yogacaras, since there is no establishment of external objects, consciousness arises from consciousness, so it seems that there is no need for examination for them. The consciousness of parents is also not the proximate cause, because it will be the same as it, becoming its cause and connection. In this way, it will become possessing its memory and thoughts, etc. This path has many examinations, so it is temporarily put aside. Therefore, any wisdom is produced from its own continuum, having the proximate cause of previous wisdom, for example, now
