This is considered to be the only one. Thus, as a characteristic to be grasped for the time being, since it is invisible, a 'one' that is related to many does not exist. Even if there were a 'one' related to many, it would not be reasonable as the nature of a universal, so it is said 'related to them' and so on. 'Related to them' refers to the distinction and face of the appearances. 'It has been said' means that duality and so on, and the substance of the fruit, will also become the nature of a universal, because it has already been said. If one is related to many, it is therefore not a universal. However, one that is a non-different expression and the cause of intelligence is a universal, but all of duality and so on are not. That is because it is not the reason for sound and knowledge as described. If so, how does knowledge arise, and how does knowledge with the same aspect arise, if the distinction that appears to others is not made into the nature of a universal through the door of others and through the door of a universal? It is said, 'Because the other is related to it' and so on. If it is said that because it is related to those appearances, knowledge also arises to others through the door of a universal, then the teacher said 'number' and so on. This is the seventh of the characteristics of existence. The condensed meaning is that even if there is a number, the substance of the fruit, having limbs and so on, and having the sound of 'and so on', it will become a universal. If it is said that because number and so on are not the nature of a universal, knowledge with the same aspect will not arise in the substance of its power, then it is said, 'What is this nature of a universal, is it not its own function?'. Because the characteristic of a universal other than number and so on is not known itself, this is not reasonable. This is the concluding statement. It is shown by 'it itself is related to it' and so on, and to the question 'What is this nature of a universal?', you answer that if one is related to many, then non-different knowledge arises for the appearances, therefore, because of the cause of the arising of knowledge, the one related to many is a universal. Having spoken of the characteristic of a universal, to that characteristic of a universal, what I have said

Whatever is related to multiple things, such as fruits, etc., the word "etc." includes two or more. From these things, a single kind of cognition will occur for the objects that are the basis of these things. Why? Because there is a reason. If it is thought that a single cognition arises only from being related to multiple things, then the multiple relations that are the reason for a single cognition also exist in things like fruits. Therefore, a single cognition also applies to numbers, etc., which are also the nature of universals. If it is not so, that is, if numbers, etc., although possessing the characteristics of universals as described above, are not considered to be the nature of universals, then other things considered to be universals will also not be universals. Why? Because there is no difference. If things, etc., also become universals, then the nature of things and qualities, etc., will be confused. "Merely an appearance of mind" means that in the mind of conceptual thought, it appears as a single image, because now it is the nature of cognition. If it is said that because cognition exists like cognition, it is a universal, then add this sentence. "That is not" and other statements are used to negate. Whatever considers the universal to be the nature of cognition, just like the nature of cognition, is not other than cognition, then how can other external things follow? This is the conclusion that they are not universals. It is shown by "that is the nature of cognition" and other statements, because the nature of cognition does not exist in those things. If it is said that it is true that it does not follow the nature of cognition, but because it is attached to the appearance of mind as its nature, it fabricates external things, therefore, due to this illusion, it is mistaken that this is the same nature of things, so the name of universal is falsely established. This is merely a view that is once again put forward by the proponents of tenets. The author of the treatise considers that the single result of the nature of luminosity, and things that are not its result, are the reason for this mind, therefore this mind has a basis for eliminating others. And others merely do not accept such a reason.
