Commentary on the Compendium on Valid Cognition: Śākya's Intellect Commentary on the Compendium on Valid Cognition Śākya's Intellect In Sanskrit: Pramāṇavārtikakārikā. In Tibetan: Commentary on the Compendium on Valid Cognition. First Chapter. Homage to the All-Knowing! He who shatters all the nets of afflictions with the sharp arrow of wisdom, possessing the nature of compassion. Whose mind, with its utterly stainless intellect, has no obstructions to all that is knowable. He who has tirelessly benefited others for countless eons. Having paid homage to that Mañjuśrī, I shall distinctly explain the treatise possessing a hundred styles of commentary. Most virtuous ones pay homage to the deity they desire when composing treatises. Therefore, this teacher will also demonstrate conduct in accordance with the noble ones, and in particular, praising the noble deity increases merit. With the increase of merit, the treatise will be completed without obstacles, and the speakers and listeners will generate merit from having praised beforehand, and observing for the sake of others. Eliminating all the networks of conceptualization. And so forth, beginning with offering to the especially exalted deity. When the name "Samantabhadra" is widely known and not regarded as a Bodhisattva, then this is an offering to the Buddha Bhagavan. This also has two aspects: praise and homage. The word "homage" indicates homage, and the rest is praise. Praise is also of three types: the perfection of one's own benefit, the perfection of the benefit of others, and the means of perfecting the benefit of others. If one's own benefit is perfected, then one can accomplish the benefit of others, so first, the upper half of the verse explains the perfection of one's own benefit. The perfection of one's own benefit, which is the nature of the three bodies, is also shown to be distinguished by three aspects: the excellence of abandoning obscurations, the excellence of profundity, and the excellence of vastness. Conceptualization is mind and mental factors, belonging to the three realms, entering into the aspects of self and what belongs to self, and and entering into the aspects of the apprehended and the apprehender, and so forth. That itself is a net, because it is the nature of bondage. In what kind of body are those eliminated?

, and those that have been made into the nature of not being born again, together with the imprints, are called "such." This explains the distinction of having abandoned obscurations. The distinctions of profundity and vastness are indicated by the two words "profound and vast." The Bhagavan who has completely dispelled the net of thoughts, and who is profound because he is not the object of hearers and self-realized ones, and who is vast because he pervades all that is knowable and all the benefit of sentient beings, has the three kayas, namely, the essence, the enjoyment, and the emanation. He has dispelled the nets of thoughts and possesses a profound and vast body. Goodness is virtue, which is the characteristic of being manifestly high and definitely good. From that, for those who seek that meaning, everything arises completely and without exception as it should be, that is Samantabhadra. This explains that the benefit of others is complete and without deficiency. The means of accomplishing this complete benefit of others is explained by the words "rays of light shine forth in all directions," the rays of light are the rays. Here, because it is in accordance with the Dharma to make things very clear as they are, the Dharma teachers are manifestly high, and only those who have the object of definitely accomplishing good are like rays of light, and therefore they are called rays of light. Those who show everything, and therefore completely shine forth and pervade the means of accomplishing the benefit of others for the trainees, are the rays of light that shine forth in all directions. The one who has such rays of light that teach the Dharma is the one whose rays of light shine forth in all directions. Because it is a phrase of prostration, it is the fourth. When it depends on fame, the word Samantabhadra is known as a special bodhisattva from a very large rope, so this is an offering to the bodhisattva, and the words should be connected as before. The difference is that the complete dispelling of the net of thoughts itself should be seen from the abandonment of obscurations of the bodhisattva's ground. Profundity is seen from the fact that it is not the object of hearers, self-realized ones, and ordinary beings. Vastness is seen from the great nature of the bodhisattva. Bodh
