Bodhisattvas also possess the three bodies that are in accordance with them. Because they have reached the ultimate, they are established as belonging to the Buddhas. Although there are indeed wise people who undertake to write treatises called "Commentary," however, because the faults of the listeners are many, even if there is benefit, it is as if there is none. Therefore, in order to show that only the mind tamed by the habit of good speech is the cause of writing treatises, and to show that this fault that leads to the loss of great meaning is something that should be abandoned, the second verse, "Most people," etc., is mentioned in an implied way. Here, four kinds of faults of the listeners are pointed out, namely: poor wisdom, not understanding, not seeking meaning, and not being impartial. "Most people" means many people. "Attached to the vulgar" means that the vulgar refers to the doctrines of the outsiders. It means that there is attachment to those doctrines, because it is understandable. This is to express many words with different bases. Or, where does attachment exist? This is only to unify the basis, because it is attachment to vulgar objects, so it is vulgar. This explains that the fault of the listeners is poor wisdom. "Without the ability of wisdom" refers to those who do not have the ability of wisdom and cannot grasp the doctrine. It should be combined with "most people." This explains not understanding. Not only do they not seek the meaning of good speech, but they are also completely hated by jealousy and impurity for the expression of good speech, that is, they neither seek meaning nor are they full of hatred. This is a summary statement. This explains, in order, not seeking meaning and not being impartial. Here, it should also be combined with "most people." Jealousy refers to the inner disturbance of the mind when others achieve something. Because it makes the mind impure, it is described as defilement. The many words are explained by clear distinctions. Because that is the reason, therefore, for me, I want to write a treatise called "Commentary."

There is no thought that this is beneficial to others. The benefit of others, that is, benefit arises from this, that is, benefit arises. Or, since it benefits others, benefiting others is action. Then, how does one enter into composing treatises? It is mentioned that "the mind is long-lasting" and so on. "Long-lasting" means a long time. What is produced by being accustomed to good speech is what is produced by being accustomed to good speech. To take to heart is attachment and special insistence. Those who have developed taking to heart by being accustomed to good speech are called that. Because of that reason, joy arose for this thing called the Commentary on Valid Cognition, and a manifest desire arose in the mind, some explain it that way. Others explain it differently. Why does Acharya Dharmakirti explain the Compendium of Valid Cognition in the manner of the Commentary on Valid Cognition, and not just compose a treatise for his own pleasure? In this occasion of questioning, "most people" and so on are mentioned. The concise meaning of this verse is that I, with thought and compassion, have arisen in my mind with the desire to explain the Compendium of Valid Cognition, that is its meaning. Thought and compassion are because the treatise composed by Acharya Dignāga has little benefit, and the small benefit is also due to the faults of the listeners. The meaning of the words should be explained. "Most" means many, and should be combined with "people who are attached to the vulgar." "Most" refers to inferior worldly people, that is, those who arise from bad causes. Similarly, the treatises of non-Buddhists and those made by others that refute the tenets of the teachers also arise from inverted knowledge, so they also arise from bad causes. Therefore, they are vulgar, and those who are attached to and follow them are called that. Again, why are they attached to the vulgar? Because there is no power of wisdom, so it is mentioned, "because there is no power of wisdom." Therefore, they consider this to be a good explanation even though it is a wrong explanation, and therefore they are attached to the vulgar. Precisely because there is no power of wisdom, they themselves cannot correctly understand the good speech of the teachers.
