Moreover, if direct perception becomes very familiar and clear, eliminating the cause of delusion, it generates subsequent conceptual thoughts that distinguish between meaning and non-meaning. After experiencing meaning and non-meaning separately, the certainty that arises about what is experienced, just as it is experienced, is itself the basis for direct perception distinguishing between meaning and non-meaning. It is also impossible to say that meaning and non-meaning are distinguished solely by subsequent conceptual thought, because conceptual thought does not grasp the self-nature of things. If it did grasp, then conceptual thought itself would cease, because the clear appearance of meaning in relation to conceptual thought is contradictory. Because there is no clarity in some cases, the cause of delusion in direct perception cannot be eliminated, which can only be determined by inference, but not in all cases. Therefore, direct valid cognition itself is certain from itself and others, and this meaning will be established in the second chapter, so it will not be elaborated here. Direct perception that has eliminated the cause of delusion, because it generates certainty as it is experienced, must undoubtedly be considered the cause of distinguishing meaning and non-meaning itself. If this is not the case, then inference will also not be established, because signs such as smoke have not been established. If smoke and so on are also understood by inference, then it will lead to infinite regress, because other inferences are also needed to establish these signs. Furthermore, if direct perception is not the basis for distinguishing meaning and non-meaning, then the statement made by the author of the treatise, "Obtaining benefit and non-benefit from other treatises, and abandonment, are undoubtedly based on correct knowledge," would also contradict it. Similarly, statements such as "Having completely determined the meaning through these two," and "Having seen those themselves, from the memory arising from the power of experience," would also contradict it. Therefore, it should be explained in another way, the meaning is the measure of valid cognition composed by Master Dharmakirti.

It is definition and so on, because it possesses reason. That which is not meaningful is made by non-Buddhists, because it does not possess reason. Differentiating these two is to establish them as possessing reason and not possessing reason. This is because it relies on inference; only by relying on inference can the words of definition be established as possessing reason and not possessing reason. It is not based on direct perception, because direct perception is not an object of differentiation. If it is said that the definition of inference has already been stated, then it is said "by reversed discrimination," because of ignorance about inference, in order to establish it, by eliminating the reversed discrimination of inference, the treatise is explained. It means that because relying on inference, the meaning of all comprehensive collections should be explained, but there are also reversed discriminations about inference, so first it should be established. Just as when composing the second chapter, the teacher will also explain the cause of explaining the definition of annihilation after establishing inference and so on. If it is said that inference should be established, then why only establish the reason through "property of the subject" and so on? This is not a fault, because it can only be established from the branch of separately explaining the reason. From this verse, the definition of the sign, the determination of number, the cause of determination, and the elimination from the dissimilar side are explained. Among them, "property of the subject, its part pervades" is the definition. "Its part" is the dharma to be proven. "Only pervades it" is to hold firmly. "Three kinds" is the determination of number. "Without, it does not arise, therefore" is the cause of the determination of number, meaning that without, it does not arise, it is determined to be only three kinds. "Seeming reason, other than that" is the elimination from the dissimilar side, meaning that other than these three reasons, the others are seeming reasons. M
