The reason for saying "for the sake of" is that it cannot be certain that places and other things are the only things that exist. Therefore, the reason for saying "therefore" is because of that. Mentioning "place and time" is symbolic, and substances can also be included. The reason for saying "where" is in places and so on. The reason for saying "once seen" is the direct perception as mentioned before, that is, if any of those things that can be seen nearby are missing. The reason for saying "otherwise" is if this is not the nature of being produced by it. The reason for saying "that" is smoke. If it is certain there, if it is certain to exist in the collection of fire and so on, then how can it arise from something other than fire? It will not arise. If it arises, then it will not be smoke. Just like this, smoke is produced by it, it is the difference in the nature produced by fire. Similarly, the cause is also the nature of producing such a result, it is the nature of being able to produce smoke. The thing that has become the cause still has the ability to function even in the state of being separated from smoke, therefore it is not a non-pervasive characteristic. In this way, fire and smoke abide in a nature that is determined to be mutually dependent. If it is thought that smoke can also arise from something other than fire, then at that time, that fire is not the nature of producing smoke. Just like this, when smoke arises from something that is not fire, then producing smoke is not the unique nature of fire. That which is not the nature of fire, how can it be fire? Therefore, because it is not the nature of producing smoke, fire will never produce smoke. Smoke will also not become the nature of smoke, or mention smoke and so on. Or, if it arises from something other than fire, then it is not smoke. Why? Because it is not the nature of producing smoke, but it arises from something other than fire and is seen. However, if it is thought that as the cause of smoke, something other than fire also has the nature of producing smoke just like fire, then at that time, if it itself is that nature, if it itself is the nature of producing smoke, then it itself is fire, therefore there will be no confusion about smoke. In order to easily understand the past content, a verse is made: If Indra's head is of fire.

Thus, and so on, has been stated. The phrase "If it is the nature of fire" means, in other words, "if it is not the nature of producing smoke." This is what is said in the teachings of the Lama. Indra's head itself is fire, and the reason for calling it fire is limited to that. However, the phrase "that is not the nature of fire" means it is not the nature of producing smoke. "That" refers to Indra's head. "From that" means from Indra's head. Why does it not arise? Because it has been said, "The nature of the cause of smoke is fire," and so on, combining the words as "whatever has the nature of the cause of smoke," thereby establishing that "it is only fire." "Possessing its distinct power" means that by virtue of being the cause with the power to produce smoke, it is distinct from other things, that is, different. "Smoke from a non-smoke cause" means that if one asserts that smoke arises and comes forth from something that is not the nature of fire, then that smoke would become causeless, as has been said before. Others say: Well, then, how is it now? and so on. "Well, then" means unbearable. "Now" means that if one does not accept that smoke and so on arise from dissimilar things of the same kind, then how can different things that come together produce a single result from mutually different categories? What is an example? "For example," and so on, has been said. The sound of "and so on" includes appearance and attention. The debater's thought is: If that is the case, then consciousness also arises from the nature of the eye, and also arises from form and attention, which are not the nature of the eye, but this is not causeless either. Similarly, smoke also arises from fire, and also arises from Indra's head, which is not fire, and it would not become causeless, would it? "Producing solely from its own nature," and so on, is a refutation from this: Among the eye and so on, there is no instance of each one producing independently, from the nature that is the nature of producing it. If such a thing were to exist, then at that time, because the causes would be confused with each other, it would become causeless.
