If it is said that something similar to the nature of... arises from something else. The proponent of the established tenet would say: From dissimilar things... etc. How can something that is dissimilar to fire, that is not the nature of producing smoke, be similar to it? It is the nature of smoke produced by fire. It is not so, because the place of confusion that thinks so is that it arises from a cause similar to fire, because the cause of arising is similar to fire. Because the cause of arising is similar to it, it will become similar to smoke. If from dissimilar things, also from things dissimilar to fire, something similar to it arises, then if something similar to the nature of smoke produced by fire arises, then the abilities of these things are uncertain. Because the ability of similar and dissimilar causes, whatever it is, its certainty only produces similar things, and dissimilar things only produce dissimilar things, because there is no such saying, so the difference of cause is not the difference of effect, all the variety will become without cause. If it is said that no matter from what cause it arises, it is not without cause. Then, everything arises from everything... etc. If it is said that it can also arise from incapable things, then everything will arise from everything, but it is not so. Therefore... etc., therefore means, therefore, from where smoke is seen to arise, that is the form seen, namely fire. The meaning of something that does not conform to this is, it does not mean fire. If it is so, if smoke is without cause, then it will either always exist or not exist. Why? Because a thing without cause does not depend on its own accomplishment, because it does not depend on other causes. If it is said that even if it does not depend on other causes, it will occasionally be interrupted. Things occasionally... etc. Smoke... etc., this shows that it will never not arise, but will arise at all times. Why? Because its arising, the nature of smoke arises, does not depend on cause, there is nothing incomplete, just like the desired time, whenever one wants smoke to arise.

Shinno. Or, the so-called "at that time also" means that even when desired, smoke will not arise, because there is no difference when there is no smoke. In order to distinguish the latter half, it is said "dependent things" etc. For example, depending on the feasible place and smoke, those moments of existence and non-existence of fruit, respectively, are the very feasibility and infeasibility of producing fruit. Because it possesses those that are. Saying "time" is to indicate that the same should be said for places and things. However, if one does not think so, then in the places and times that have and do not have fruit, feasibility and infeasibility are the same, and for those things that have the same, it cannot be determined whether they have that thing or do not have that thing, because the time of the fruit itself is having that thing, that is, having the fruit. Different from that is not having that thing, that is, not having the fruit. Because these cannot be determined, or because feasibility itself is the same, at both moments of existence and non-existence of fruit, it will have fruit. Or because infeasibility itself is the same, it will not have fruit. Therefore, only when it exists is it feasible, and things also depend on it and occasionally change. If it is said that the desired place and time etc. are merely seemingly feasible, but these alone are not the cause of things, therefore it is said "feasibility itself also" etc. Because if that were the case, if the nature of causelessness were one, it would always exist or not exist. In order not to be so, it is said "because it is not so" etc., for the thing that exists after abandoning, it is not dependent, and for the thing that exists, it is dependent. If places etc. already exist somewhere, but how are they dependent on them? Therefore it is said "for example" etc., the so-called "existing like that" means abandoning one and existing in another place. If things only depend on places etc., and places etc. do not benefit it, therefore it is said "the benefits they do" etc., there it cannot be determined.
