It is eliminated by non-apprehension. If one apprehends from the previous non-apprehension of what has become the characteristic of the object of apprehension, then the apprehension is the result of those, and it should be determined as such. Thus, is it said that the direct perception that assists non-apprehension is the establishment of the reality of cause and effect? Those who say that one is confused by seeing a cow immediately after not seeing a horse before are refuted. If it can be determined there that there was no horse before, and that it did not come from elsewhere, and that it is not caused by a different lineage, then there also it becomes the reality of cause and effect. Therefore, how could it become a confused view? It is not possible to determine that point. Thus, for the time being, it is said that the direct perception that precedes non-apprehension is established. Now, the non-apprehension that precedes direct perception is spoken of, such as "one" from that. Among those who see the result arising from proximity, when one of them does not exist, then the non-apprehension is its result. When fire and wood are close, there is smoke, but if there are no horses, etc., there is no non-apprehension, but if there is no fire, etc., then it becomes non-apprehension. Thus, the direct perception and non-apprehension that accompany each other, for the causes that are clearly desired, establish the nature of cause without hesitation. That again, is the characteristic of the result, as previously stated, which is in the smoke. Therefore, smoke arises only from fire. If it also arises from other than that, then at that time, if it does not exist, that is, if there is smoke without fire, then it becomes transcendence of having a cause, and becomes without a cause. If from a collection of fire, etc., only one smoke is seen once, and what is seen later is another, if one thinks, how can the result of fire be established by seeing it once? Therefore, by seeing it once in that way, also, it is spoken of, etc. Seeing it in that way refers to the direct perception and non-apprehension as just described. Why? If it is not the result itself, then it is not seen even once from a non-cause, because oil cannot be obtained from sand.

Nothing whatsoever will arise. The words "fruit" and so forth indicate the meaning of the verses. The words "whatever" and so forth establish the thesis itself. This asserts the pervasion. The mistaken speaker says that even without fire there is smoke, and so forth. This shows the property of the পক্ষ (pakṣa, subject). Therefore, the word "therefore" is because there is smoke even without fire. "It will not become its cause" means that fire will not become the cause of smoke. This is the fruit to be proven. The syllogism is: whatever exists without something is not the cause, like a horse's testicles. "Because there is smoke even without fire" means that the pervader is contradictory. If that is the case, it is thought that there will be no cause. "If it is because it has another cause" means that if smoke is caused by something other than fire, such as Indra's head, then it is not without a cause. If you say that, it is not so, because the imputation of another cause is also similar. Like this, even if it is not there, even if there is no other cause, if there is fire, there will be smoke, so that other cause will also not become the cause. Furthermore, whatever fire is, and whatever cause is other than that, is it the nature of producing smoke or not? If it is not the nature, then at that time, whether it is that fire or Indra's head, or anything else, how will smoke arise from what is not the nature of what is shown, from what is not the nature of producing smoke? Why? Because one's own is not its nature. Because it is not the nature of producing smoke, it does not produce it. That smoke will become without cause. However, if it is the nature of producing smoke, then at that time both are fire, because the characteristic of fire is to produce smoke. That will be discussed below. The mistaken speaker says, "That is not," and so forth. It is not said that only the smoke produced by fire arises from something else. If you say that, it will become without cause. Similarly, the smoke produced by fire
