Therefore, since this consciousness is dependent and sometimes changes, in this way, with the question, "What is the cause of this consciousness?" it is given the name "is the root." To become something like this is not, saying "is not," is not a characteristic of form, such as having color. To accomplish the result, such as happiness, etc., in this way, even a small matter is not expanded, the so-called "in this way" is like consciousness. Merely relying on the cause, one strives to accomplish the result, such as happiness, etc., and considers it to be a quality of the self, but even speaking of the meaning of the self does not expand it at all, because no particular cause of happiness, etc., is specified, and it is admitted to have a cause. The self is not like this, because it is admitted to be the nature of permanence, the agent, the enjoyer, etc. Because for the self that is admitted in this way, there is no sign of a result, and if it is so, and it merely becomes an invisible self, then the Buddhas, etc., say that there is no self, because it is invisible. When that self is eliminated by invisibility, then what? Those who speak of self say that there is no self merely by invisibility, this is refuting and abandoning. If this invisibility is not established, then how can one establish the reversal from dissimilar aspects, having reasons such as the life force? The Lokayatas believe that when there is consciousness, it is merely the power of the elements, and that earth is also the nature of the elements. In this way, the Lokayatas of the world, even though they believe that there is no consciousness in the earth, they have not seen it. Merely with non-valid cognition, in order to establish that it is not omniscient, etc., they posit it as a reason and say that it reverses from dissimilar aspects. The so-called "other" is the Samkhya, and they also, even though they believe that there is no yogurt, etc., in milk, etc., they still say that the eyes, etc., are for the sake of others, because they are aggregates. After saying this, for the meaning that is not for the sake of others, such as a rabbit's horn, etc., they do not see an aggregate, and say that it reverses. Like this, for the time being, here.
