It is also because it is the nature of manifest attachment. Therefore, if one thinks that even those who are free from desire are also attached, therefore it is said that "compassion and so on are not like that." The compassion and so on of those who are free from desire are not directed towards sentient beings. Furthermore, the so-called "also because of existence" means that those who are directed towards the Dharma are also because of existence. This will be explained later. If one infers desire from words, then it is impossible to understand from words alone. Combine this with "Just as one speaks of attachment, being free from desire and abandoning desire are also the same." It is not possible to infer desire from words alone. Then what is it? If it is said that it is inferred from the special words produced by desire alone? Therefore, it is said, "It is not from the special either." Why? Because thoughts are difficult to understand. Those who are free from desire are as hypocritical as those who are attached, and those who are attached are as hypocritical as those who are free from desire, so thoughts are difficult to understand. Therefore, because of the indiscriminate use of words, all the words that are regarded as signs are wrong, so even from the special, it is impossible to infer desire. Regarding what was said, "Those who are free from desire also speak like that," some people worry that slander will arise, so they say, "If because there is no need," and so on. To speak is to express in words. There is no result in expressing freedom from desire in words. If that is the case, then one would think that there is no error in desire and words. The teacher said, "No," saying, because it is for the benefit of others, so it is not unnecessary. Furthermore, if one says, "Because of being free from desire," and so on, one would think that those who are free from desire will not be attached to others either, and if there is no attachment, they will not act for the benefit of others. That is not the case, because compassion also acts. If one says that compassion itself is desire, then if one names compassion as desire, that is a wish. If one says that compassion also arises from inversion because of seeing sentient beings

If it is said that the nature of attachment is a fault, then it is said "from non-perversion" and so on. In order to show that it arises from non-perversion, it is said "although compassion has no self-grasping" and so on. The so-called "merely seeing the difference of suffering" refers to merely generating a definite understanding of the suffering of conditioned existence. The so-called "arising from the power of habituation" refers to the moment of compassion, which arises only from the preceding moments of the same kind. In order to combine with the scriptures, it is said "like this" and so on. Loving-kindness and so on, refers to loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and so on. Focusing on sentient beings refers to ordinary people. Focusing on Dharma refers to noble beings. The word "etc." includes the objectless, which refers to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, who are free from the manifest clinging to the grasper and the grasped. Intention comes from the tenets. The so-called "those also" refers to loving-kindness and so on. The so-called "arising from habituation with the same kind" refers to arising from the power of the preceding moments. The so-called "not dependent on attachment" means that it does not arise from following the attachment to sentient beings; this is its synonym. If you ask, is it not the case that merely seeing the difference of suffering arises from the power of habituation, is this not what was just said? The answer is, if it is true, then that is only dependent on compassion, but now it is only dependent on everything, so there is a difference. If you say that attachment and so on are also the same as it, then attachment and so on do not arise merely from seeing conditioned existence, because if there is no perversion towards self and mine, etc., they will not arise. If you say that the actions of a compassionate person, due to the power of loving-kindness and so on, arise for sentient beings without result, and also arise from perversion, because for those without attachment, there is no benefit for themselves. If you think that the result is only for one's own benefit, then this is not a fault, because it is thought that only benefiting others is the result. If you say that if benefiting others is needed, then how is the result understood?
