If asked, how does the suitability and combination with one's own basis become clear? The answer is, speaking of "one's own basis" etc., this refers to the general. Speaking of "other," it refers to one's own basis. The teacher speaks of "here" etc., because it has already been explained by "the basis that does not benefit should be contemplated here" etc. If it is said that the connection of one's own basis with combination is the cause of the arising of consciousness in oneself or others, then because it is thought that the general thing that relies on the combination of one's own basis is the cause of consciousness, therefore, one's own basis with combination will only give rise to self. Why? Because the nature of the cause, the cause of consciousness, does not exist before one's own basis and combination, and from one's own basis and combination, the nature of consciousness exists. If it is said that because the general is the nature of arising consciousness, it is permanent, but this is not established. The answer is, speaking of "its nature" etc., if "its nature exists," it refers to the existence of the nature of arising consciousness. It was also said before, "from one's own basis and combination," this is to say that even in the realm of emptiness without manifestation, it arises only from the general. Because there will be the fault of arising consciousness with the general aspect. Speaking of "manifestation is" etc., this is the opponent's view, manifestation is the basis. The general is perfected, which is to make it possible. For that reason, whatever is not making the general manifest, should give rise to the general. Then what is it? The answer is, "holding it" refers to holding the general, this is to say the situation of making it manifest through perfection. The teacher speaks of "that also" etc., like eye medicine etc., this is an example of different dharma. Just as it is reasonable to perfect the senses from eye medicine etc., but it is not so for manifestation. Why? Because it is thought to be what makes it manifest, so it should be made manifest. "It exists and does not exist, always." This is the phrase of the seventh (chapter).

The second chapter. Understanding is knowing. "Eye medicine, etc." and so on are to be explained. Eye medicine, etc., perfects the senses, thereby enabling certain things that have become self to obtain particularity. For the sake of understanding, that is, for the reason of understanding and for the sake of generating special knowledge, up to "for the sake of understanding." "The reason related to karma." This is the seventh here, just like this, understanding becomes the reason, excellence becomes the karma, and there is a causal relationship. If you ask why this is so, then "clarity," etc., is stated, connecting by changing the classification of understanding. In this way, the senses being blurred, etc., cause it to decline, thereby generating unclear consciousness. If eye medicine, etc., perfects it, then it will be known that it becomes clear. Therefore, the senses are perfected in order to obtain excellence for the meaning of understanding. When eye medicine, etc., does not have the difference of understanding, then it is also not done, even if there is no difference of understanding, eye medicine, etc., is not the perfection itself that perfects the senses. Just as eye medicine, etc., perfects the senses, it does not come from clarity. Why? Then it is said, "It always exists and does not exist." If, in the past, when it did not exist, trees, etc., generated unclear consciousness, and later, when a clear cow approached, it became clear. If it is known that the perfection of the senses is to become clear. Just as the clear cow makes it clear when it exists, whatever arises from the tree, when it does not exist, for the tree, etc., the same thing arises. If it is said that even if the object is perfected, there is no difference in understanding in other objects, therefore, that is also unreasonable. Then it is said, "Object," etc. Certain objects of smell, etc., are perfected, and that also makes the senses special. In other places, if the senses do not have a difference in understanding in other objects, even so, it is because it makes it special, because the objects are determined separately, that is also special.
