Furthermore, if by means of sound, there is no exclusion of other things for the difference that exists on one thing, then how can one recognize what this difference is that exists on one thing for things that do not exist? And what are the other things that are excluded from that? The answer is, for the time being, let's take the example of what is expressed by the word 'tree'. For the wisdom that has discriminating thoughts, it appears as having branches and so on, and in the form of all trees, the essence seems to be no different; and from things that are not its essence, it appears to be different, in a way that it is not, this is the difference that exists on one thing. Similarly, the difference that exists on one thing, which is expressed by the word 'vase' and so on, should also be understood. When the sound indicates it, because there is no exclusion of dissimilar kinds, the characteristic of negation is indirectly understood, that is, the exclusion of other things from it. How does the sound express only one of any distinguishing difference, and the recognition of it itself is the recognition of concomitance? What is indirectly established by other exclusions is the recognition of exclusion, thus, through the recognition of concomitance and exclusion, the sound has meaning. In order to clarify this, it is said 'difference one' and so on, in order to recognize the difference of characteristics that appear to the wisdom that has discriminating thoughts, in order, the sound is made by expressing concomitance and exclusion, concomitance is directly expressed, and exclusion is to be regarded as indirectly expressed. Through such expression, the teacher Dignāga, when showing that sounds are merely components of words, said that by excluding from that, one can recognize the aspect of things, or similarly, through it, one can recognize the distinguished characteristics. The sound called 'exclusion' expresses exclusion, and the sound called 'aspect of things' expresses concomitance. This also explains that the sound can exclude sound and other meanings, and express its own meaning. Among them, one's own meaning is the difference that exists on one thing, that is, the thing that appears to the wisdom that has discriminating thoughts. Among them, excluding other meanings is excluding other meanings, that is, the characteristic of negation. The so-called 'it does not exist' refers to indirect understanding.

These are different words. Because even if one different thing is said, the exclusion of others is understood by implication. Therefore, it is said, "Because of that very reason," etc. One's own meaning is because it is the nature of difference. The meaning of the sound of 'tree' is also whatever appears to the conceptualization associated with branches, etc., that is the nature of difference. Because it turns back from forms that are not itself. Therefore, merely stating one's own meaning, which is the nature of difference, one understands the exclusion of others by implication. If the meaning of 'not-tree' is excluded by implication, then the meaning of 'tree' can be understood from the nature of difference from 'not-tree.' Therefore, the function of sound is only to state its own meaning, and the exclusion of others is by implication, so sound does not have two functions. Therefore, in cases such as not taking a young woman, since one sound cannot perform two functions, it would follow that two sounds must be uttered in all cases, which has been refuted. If one's own meaning is the nature of difference, then when the primary statement is to accomplish this particular own meaning, only the following can be understood from the sound, not the reversal. When negation is primarily performed, such as "One should not drink alcohol," it is not to establish the reversal of drinking, but only to negate falling into drinking. Therefore, if it is said that by stating the following and the reversal, sounds only appear as branches of terminology, then that statement is not reasonable. Having said "merely without reversal," etc., establishing the meaning of separate determination is following, such as "Cut the tree." Therein, the implicit exclusion of what is not a tree is reversal. What does not have that is without reversal. Such following also does not exist. However, everything is only with reversal. Even if there is no reversal without following, it does not do anything to remain in the position of that object, so it will similarly fall into conditions, etc. Other self-nature is also not an obscuration of this, because its
