Just as sandalwood and others are different from non-trees, non-trees are also similar to trees, the difference being that both exist. Therefore, the sound called "tree," for the meaning of tree existing on one thing, and the various differences existing on it, appears in the discriminating mind with the same nature, whatever is expressed, since there is no phenomenon of excluding other things from that thing, it does not exist. Therefore, since there is no exclusion of non-trees from the meaning of trees, if the meaning of excluding non-trees is understood from that thing, then the self-nature excluded from non-trees will express the meaning of trees. The difference from others is that the difference in action appearing in the discriminating wisdom is precisely the exclusion from that thing, and the exclusion from other things, understood and comprehended through implication in the manner described above, thereby extracting what is called "thing." I think this comes from seeing the reversed thing, so it is called the "part" of the thing. As it is said, the sound, among those things that generate attachment, for those that generate attachment to the reversed self-nature, only shows one form appearing in the discriminating wisdom, because only that appears in the knowledge of sound. When it shows that, excluding other things will arise through implication. Therefore, the Acharya (Sanskrit, Devanagari: आचार्य, Roman: ācārya, Chinese literal meaning: teacher) thought: "Only through excluding from others, can one comprehend some parts of that thing." But by taking excluding others as the meaning of sound, one cannot comprehend any part of external things. Therefore, let's say for now: "Only through excluding from others, can one comprehend some parts of that thing." This is establishing the thesis. Now, in order to establish the thesis that the meaning of sound only expresses things distinguished by excluding from others, therefore it is said "understanding it is" etc. Understanding and comprehending the differences as described above, because it is its characteristic, so understanding it refers to the one possessing that characteristic, because there is no attachment to excluding other things from that thing, that is its characteristic.

It is meaningful. Thus, when sound only makes the difference that appears in the mind understood, whatever forcefully infers other meanings, if it does not exist, then it does not exist. Therefore, the teacher said that the distinguished characteristic is understood by excluding other meanings. Like "the one who holds a stick," this is an inconsistent example. Just as saying "the way of holding a stick" through the way of "holding a stick," it is not right to say "having exclusion" through the way of exclusion. If anything is distinguished by anything, then the external meanings will be expressed through sounds, then the exclusion of other meanings becomes the reason for the application of sound, which does not exist. Because, if in the way of distinguishing, other sounds do not express the things that are excluded from other meanings, therefore, through clarification and so on. If sound expresses the things that are distinguished by excluding other meanings, then the fault said in the aspect of merely relating to this, that is also having the exclusion of others. Some say that the characteristic is a difference, therefore, explaining this is because it is characteristic. Is it not considered that exclusion itself is a difference? If someone doubts, how can the exclusion of other meanings become a difference, therefore, it is said "through the two things to be distinguished" and so on. The things to be distinguished, tree and non-tree, the difference between the two, because it exists in both tree and non-tree, even if saying the existing difference, relative to non-tree, the difference existing in the tree, even if the sound expresses it, it will not infer other meanings. Relative to non-tree, the difference existing in the tree, in addition to that, it will also infer the difference of non-tree relative to the tree. If from the tree, the non-tree also becomes different, then, the non-tree is also different from the tree. Therefore, this is called the reason, therefore, because it is characteristic, that is why it is said, this is issued from the heart. "For those" refers to the difference existing in one thing, and excluding other things, the basis thing of the characteristic does not exist.
