Having mentioned "different from me" and so on. Regarding the meaning of a tree, whatever is different from non-trees, such as vases, etc., that non-tree is reversed, and it should be observed how the word "tree" is established and used. Therefore, it is said that only the sound that excludes things unrelated to the work is established. Furthermore, where is it established? Having mentioned "by difference" and so on. Among the various differences of a tree, what is different from it is what is different from a non-tree. Volume Fourteen. Just as one difference of a tree is different from a non-tree, all differences of a tree are the same. Therefore, these things that are different from trees are established on the same basis of cognition, so the forms are similar. For this difference with similar forms, words are established. The word "-ness" in "that-ness" is the meaning that must be grasped. For those with discriminating minds, the form that appears in the mind has been well explained by the teacher Dignāga. How is it explained? Having said, "By being different from others, a small part of that thing can be understood." The meaning of this will be clarified in the commentary. For this difference, there is not even a little of its own nature except for confusion. Therefore, what the elucidator said, if exclusion from other things is the same and consistent for everything, then the names will be inconsistent, because other names will be said for the generalities, which is clear. From the sounds, only by understanding that difference, one can understand by excluding other things. That difference is the extension of excluding other things. Therefore, for that meaning of the word that excludes other things, the understanding that arises from distinguishing it with the generality of the characteristic of excluding other things has no other meaning of excluding from other things. Sound is also not both, expressing its own meaning and excluding other things, this is not both. Why? Because they do not exist with each other. Because this word is the reason, because they do not exist with each other, so the meaning of a tree is also not a non-tree.

Yes, and non-tree is also because it does not exist. Therefore, merely understanding the meaning of tree can powerfully exclude the meaning of non-tree, so sound does not have two functions. Whatever difference is expressed by sound is expressed because it seeks meaning, and also because understanding the ground can also be understood, so it is thought to have things. To this doubt, it is said "that is without things" etc. That refers to the meaning expressed by sound. Non-thing means without self-nature. For non-things, the appearances and distinctions of speakers are combined into one, and it is thought to have things, which is a confusion of the mind, meaning delusion. Speakers and listeners, what is established by discriminating wisdom, is only understood by sound in sequence, those appearances and distinctions are combined into one, and enter by the power of delusion, this is the concluding remark. It is explained by "laughable sound" etc. Which sounds express by excluding other things, then combine the words into "exclusion", exclude and establish things such as trees that are different from it. For what? It says "differences etc.". This meaning has already been separated from the sentences. Different natures appear to be the same, just as the teacher Dignāga of the school of Pramāṇavāda believes that by excluding other meanings, a part of that thing can be understood, similarly, sound only expresses the distinguished things by excluding other meanings, etc., thus showing and explaining. The sounds such as "etc." are summarized as sound and meaning excluding other meanings and expressing their own meaning. That, etc., this is establishing the doctrine, the sound of tree, the difference that appears in discrimination, when expressing, it is like excluding different meanings, that is, non-tree. Why? It says "there is on one" etc., like the difference of tree
