From that (perspective), different (things) are distinguished. This has been explained earlier, in the section "Understanding one meaning, knowing the meaning, etc., to accomplish one meaning." Because the general difference and non-difference are prevented and will be prevented, these things are different in nature, and their characteristics differ only in essence. Only some (things) can do, while others cannot, because they are the nature of producing that and not that. Named "knowing" and so on, the word "and so on" includes water, wateriness, and so on. This knower, for it, without the function of language, distinguishes and separates those things himself, thereby knowing its cause and its non-cause. That knower's, that is, what that wisdom possesses, named "having" and so on, is the wisdom that distinguishes its cause from its non-causes and establishes it, that is that wisdom, and what exists on it is what appears to it. The cause itself of the wisdom with discrimination appears and is manifest, because it is related to the "similar" that appears below, so it should be understood as the cause itself appearing as similar. What appears to discrimination is not the cause itself, because they do not exist in external objects, the knower only says that because he is particularly attached to it. Separated from non-causal things, here also the words "similar" and "appearing" are combined as before, that is, appearing as similar separated from the essence of those non-causes of the wisdom that knows in one way. In order to combine the appearing and the things to be distinguished into one, the essence is similar together with the external objects, that is, here also combine "appearing." In the subsequent time of the agreement, in order to be able to distinguish those things from those that do not do those things, the difference appears in the discrimination of the exclusion of others, and in all similar things, it is falsely established as the same, called speech, combining sound and becoming conventional. From that speech, at the time of expression, the exclusion of others as mentioned before is known and understood, that wisdom is confused.

Therefore, for the appearance to the mind with conceptualization, it fabricates similar appearances of external objects, and thinks of them as the same thing. Therefore, all the causes that lead to the cognition of one will be cognized as "tree." This refutes the statement that "if one cognizes through seeing, one will not cognize other appearances in the same way." Because, by distinguishing those things that are not its causes, and applying the word "tree" to those factors that are fabricated as the same, therefore, one will naturally recognize that those things that are not its causes are not trees. Therefore, there is no fault of mutual dependence. These, and so on, reveal the meaning of the summary statement. These refer to things that are different from objects of different categories, they are unique in nature, and do not share a common generality. Then, why do they not generate cognition at all times? The phrase "under the influence of conditions" and so on is cited. Condition is the knowledge of experience, through which they generate conceptualization. Because, the conceptualization of the nature of cognizing as one follows those causes. Just as a particular characteristic of a tree is essentially the cause of that kind of conceptualization, the second and so on are also similar to this, so they follow in this way, rather than there being a single thing of a general nature. Therefore, following is because, through a single result, those things that can be considered as one will be completely stable. Seeing it is called seeing the cause that produces a single result in the appearances. What exists in the mind is the appearance. Those causes of knowledge, that is, those causes of knowledge with conceptualization, and things that are different from the causes of cognition that do not appear in one way, even if they are not those causes of conceptualization, but those things that appear in conceptualization do not exist outside.

Because that is not its cause. Therefore, there is also no separation from the nature of non-cause. Because they are not things. However, there is a special attachment to and understanding of such things, and a reversed attachment to its cause and things different from it. This explains "appearing as the cause of wisdom, and being separated from the nature of non-cause." The phrase "things without distinguishing between inner and outer differences" explains "same nature." Combining the words "for which things there is no distinction between inner and outer differences," because appearances and distinguishable things are made one, it is a synonym for "the apprehended." For what purpose does the cognizer, who is to be named, abide in the distinctions, following after cognition? This refers to what the cognition is like at the time of naming. For these things that are separated from the nature of non-cause, having the same form but different natures, by naming and determining the sound "wood," therefore thinking "these are wood," following and remembering such things with such a form, in the time of expression, also through hearing the sound "these are wood," one distinguishes and understands that the things spoken of before are its cause, and distinguishes them from things different from it. With this thought, the namer utters a sound for the characteristic that is different from its non-cause, able to distinguish, and appearing in the mind, as spoken of before. How does one utter the sound? Mentioning pus and others, for the distinctions of knowing oneself and others, based on the reason of the illusion of the characteristic of producing the same result, showing it in all the objects of naming that appear as one, just as for the person who knows how to recognize things, attaching as one those things that are different in kind from it and have become the cause of recognizing as one, so too for the things to be recognized, how does one who utters the sound attach them as the same, and through attachment, name everything? Thinking in this way, the cognizer also thinks in the same way. "From that" means from the sound.
