If, among trees and non-trees, one does not cling to one of tree and non-tree, why not cling to both? Because one does not cling to either, therefore, the assertion that words are applied to the meaning of distinguishing others is impossible, some, such as the maiden Malen, say. Therefore, I think it should be regarded as applying only to the nature of the generality to be established, and becoming a real thing. Some explain with "Some say," and so on. The so-called "that" refers to the tree with the characteristic of being different from non-trees. In this way, for the time being, there is no clinging to the tree. It is also said, "Those who do not cling to non-trees, those who do not understand trees," and so on, referring to those who do not understand trees. The so-called "nature of distinction" refers to distinguishing trees. The so-called "for the meaning of not abiding in the mind" means that if trees and non-trees exist in the mind, then at that time, non-trees will be completely abandoned, and the meaning of trees will be applied. The so-called "those" and so on, also point out that the same fault exists for others, so I think whatever that answer is, it is the same for me. The so-called "whoever those" and so on, refers to explaining, whoever those who thus acknowledge a single general thing, and refute that there is a fault of mutual dependence in applying it by distinguishing other things, for those people's generality of the tree itself, when applying it, does it distinguish non-trees or not? These are two analyses. If it distinguishes, then for those who do not understand, distinction is impossible, therefore it must be admitted that those people understand, but that understanding does not exist either. The so-called "that itself, if distinguishing the meaning of the tree," and so on, means that if there is no clinging to the meaning of the tree, then how? This is only part of the verse. The word "in front" is not mentioned from the alternating explanation, meaning that if one does not cling to the meaning of the tree, then how does one know non-trees in front of clinging to the tree? Those who take out the word "in front" in the verse.

The sound of "earth is a thing" should not be uttered. When it is certain that it is not a tree, there is no clinging to the meaning of a tree, because clinging to a tree is preceded by clinging to what is not a tree. If it is uncertain whether it is a tree, it is also unreasonable to cling to the meaning of what is not a tree, because that too is preceded by clinging to a tree. This is indicated by "at that time," etc., that is, at the time of the term called "at that time." The so-called "comprehender" is the one who names for what purpose. Why doesn't he know? Because it is said, "That should be known," etc. If it is only for the sake of knowing trees and non-trees, then how can one know trees and non-trees later than the naming? Because by striving for that meaning, one approaches striving for the meaning of naming, that is, for accomplishment. Therefore, at the time of terminology, the comprehender does not know trees and non-trees. How can that one who does not know trees and non-trees comprehend the distinction of non-trees in naming? In fact, it can be comprehended. Even if one does not comprehend the distinction of non-trees, it is still possible. For the meaning of a tree, there exists something other than that tree, which has not been completely abandoned, which has not been distinguished, and that is the one who has not completely abandoned that other. There, one places and names, that is, for which sound that exists, it is taken as having meaning. Or, one can shorten the words and say, "For this, there exists a way of placing that other, which has not been completely abandoned." That is to say, from the nature of doubt that has not been distinguished from being a tree, the establisher of naming is applied. In another way, that other is other than a tree. There, one places, that is, names. Because this both places on that other and has not been completely abandoned, it should be understood from knowledge. One should say as before, "Where does the sound of 'that tree' exist?" In short, because the meaning of a tree has not been distinguished from a non-tree, the sound of naming for that, if the characteristic of a tree is different, then it will also be mistakenly applied to a non-tree. Those who have the sound of "tree," when applying terms, completely abandon that.
