Therefore, in terms of the nature of things, a sāmānya (梵文天城体:sāmānya,梵文罗马拟音:sāmānya,汉语字面意思:common characteristic) does not appear in consciousness. However, according to your tenets, that which does not appear to consciousness has action and power, because it performs and generates results, so action is to be taken as power. Thus, even if it is admitted that it does not appear, it is shown that power has been admitted. In order to show that even if it appears, it has no power, hair and so forth are mentioned. Because it has deteriorated and separated from the very nature of things, it is deteriorated. The words are arranged by saying that sound and so forth are themselves deteriorated. Although they appear to the consciousness of those with cataracts and so forth, they have no action. Because the word 'action' is explained in detail as before, the word 'no action' expresses no power, meaning that it cannot generate consciousness. Therefore, since it appears even though it has no power, it is not certain that there is power because it appears. If these benefit one, how can they not benefit the same mind? In order to answer the doubts of others about what has been said, words such as 'if different and not different' are mentioned, which is a synonym for 'having the same nature.' 'For different things' refers to their own characteristics. 'From many' and so forth are used to explain that the forms of dissimilar characteristics are their forms. That which is placed and entrusted to the mind is called that. If it arises only from dissimilar characteristics, then in such a case, it will not appear as non-different, because appearance will also change. Therefore, it does not arise only from dissimilar characteristics, but a sāmānya (梵文天城体:sāmānya,梵文罗马拟音:sāmānya,汉语字面意思:common characteristic) arises from things. If you say so, then answer with 'for those who hold to a sāmānya (梵文天城体:sāmānya,梵文罗马拟音:sāmānya,汉语字面意思:common characteristic)' and so forth. It is said thus: If you think that by placing one's own characteristics in one's own form, minds with the form of a sāmānya (梵文天城体:sāmānya,梵文罗马拟音:sāmānya,汉语字面意思:common characteristic) are generated, then in that case, how can it be said that non-difference appears to different things? This is impossible, because for minds that hold to a sāmānya (梵文天城体:sāmānya,梵文罗马拟音:sāmānya,汉语字面意思:common characteristic), their own characteristics do not appear at all. Like a sāmānya (梵文天城体:sāmānya,梵文罗马拟音:sāmānya,汉语字面意思:common characteristic)

If it is admitted that the minds that hold their own characteristics appear as a certain self-aspect, then there are three considerations: Does the essence that appears to the minds of the eye, etc., also appear to the general minds? Or, is the essence that appears to the general minds the same as the characteristics of their own characteristics? Or, why does one essence appear to the eye consciousness, and another appear to the minds of conceptualization, is it to be admitted that one difference has two essences? If it is like the first case, then like the minds of the eye, etc., if there are no own characteristics, then the general minds will also disappear, but it is not so, because even without them, even without their own characteristics, those general minds exist. In order to show that the second case does not exist, it is said, "For one's own consciousness," and so on. One's own consciousness is the consciousness of the eye, etc., these are one's own consciousness because they are the appearance of uncommon clarity. From the general aspect, it appears as a different uncommon aspect, if the essence that appears to the consciousness of the general aspect is only that of the clear ones, then at that time, one's own consciousness will not appear as a different aspect. If it is said that the clear ones have two essences, then it is said, "Because one cannot have many aspects," because one and many are contradictory. It is not reasonable for one to have many. This negates the third case. Also, because of being too extreme, that is to say, if one thinks of one as many, then nothing will become one. Therefore, only one's own characteristics are the nature of particularity, but the general is not the nature of particularity, and the particular does not appear to the general mind. Because it is so, this mind with a general aspect arises from that, arises from different things, and holds different things. If it is the aspect of one's own characteristics, then it will not appear as undifferentiated and as one. However, this depends on the habit established by experiencing the holding of one's own characteristics.
