If it is said to be transformation? No, although it is direct perception, it is uncertain because there is a reason for confusion. Therefore, as it is said, because of the separation of the grasper and the grasped, the eye consciousness and so on are non-dual. Those non-duals appear as two, because they appear as the nature of the grasper and the grasped, so those are also confused, which will be explained in the third chapter. If so, how to distinguish between valid cognition and non-valid cognition? It is said, "all" and so on. Deception is confusion. Appearing as that is like valid cognition. The establishment of valid cognition and what appears as such is the distinction. Abiding means that the alaya consciousness has the seed of confusion. Abiding transformation means being free from obscurations. The middle means the boundary, before the abiding transformation, it is always capable of accomplishing the purpose, and because it accomplishes the desire, it is established as valid cognition. Accomplishing the purpose is the characteristic of the consciousness that appears as burning and cooking, etc. Having that ability and that desire, because it is the desire of the individual. In order to accomplish that, connect the words in this way, it is necessary to grasp only the accomplishment of desire, not only the accomplishment, because even valid cognition sometimes cannot accomplish because the conditions are not complete. Having the ability to accomplish the purpose and accomplishing the desire is an approximation, and similarly, one should also look at the meaning of not accomplishing the desire. In this way, the reason for establishing as similar to valid cognition will be explained. If it is not like this, because it is the occasion to distinguish between valid cognition and what appears as such, saying only one will become an unreasonable nature. In the view of consciousness-only, because there is no external object, how can it have the ability to accomplish the purpose and accomplish the desire? There is no fault in this, because the appearance of fire and water, etc., is able to generate the consciousness of burning and cooking, etc., so the ability itself is said to be the voice of having ability. Thus, for the time being, the eye consciousness and so on, and smoke.

Therefore, it is explained that what arises from signs such as fire, appearing as phenomena such as fire, is established as valid cognition. In order to establish knowledge such as selflessness, which arises from signs such as actions, as valid cognition. Even though it is inverted, the word "etc." is mentioned. Knowledge such as selflessness, although erroneous because it involves the general aspect, is nevertheless valid cognition because it is in accordance with pacification. Pacification means abandoning attachment and so on. If one takes things such as selflessness as a general aspect and cultivates them, then when cultivation is accomplished, attachment and so on will not manifest their own characteristics, and therefore attachment and so on can be abandoned. Furthermore, what is erroneous but is seen as being in accordance with pacification? Therefore, "perception of mother, etc." is mentioned. Although perceiving something that is not a mother as a mother is erroneous, it is like a cause for not generating attachment. This is illustrated by this example only because of this similarity, but perceiving a mother, etc., as a mother, etc., is not valid cognition. The word "etc." includes perceiving sisters, etc., as sisters, etc. Furthermore, since there is no general entity when viewing external objects as real, if all conceptualizations are mistaken, then, just as the conceptualization of water arises from mirages, etc., whose own characteristics are separate from the general aspect of water, is mistaken, so too is the conceptualization of water that arises from genuine water being empty of the nature of water, because it is also mistaken since it involves grasping at something as being there when it is not there. Therefore, how can one know that one obtains meaning and the other does not? "Mirage," etc., is mentioned. "Other" refers to knowing genuine water as water, because there is no general aspect of water itself. Mirages and water are different things. It arises from that, and is connected to "there is no difference there." Although there is no difference in error, just as the conceptualization of water is mistaken because a mirage is separated from the nature of water and falsely imputes the general aspect of water, so too is genuine water the same, because its nature is to grasp at something as being there when it is not there. It is manifest that
