If that is the case, if one wants the root consciousness to arise from the appropriate aggregation, then the appropriate aggregation will manifest. But because it is a permanent phenomenon, it will not arise under any circumstances. Therefore, from either perspective, the valid cognition should not be established there. If one says "not other, this is meaningless," if consciousness and arising are not other, then consciousness itself is manifest, so saying arising is meaningless. If the person changes and then consciousness arises, then it will become impermanent. If one says that in order to generate consciousness, the person changes from the previous state and thus enters the object of measurement, then in this way, the person will become impermanent, and thus an undesirable result will be obtained. If one says that the self (Sanskrit: Ātman, Romanized Sanskrit: Ātman, literal meaning: self, soul) does not change, then it cannot be called valid cognition. If the person does not change, then there is no difference between it and the non-valid cognition state, so it is unreasonable for the consciousness arising from it to be a valid cognition. Therefore, the direct perception that others believe in is difficult to establish. The first chapter on direct perception from the "Treasury of Valid Cognition." // There are two types of inference: inference for oneself and inference for others. Among them, inference for oneself is seeing the meaning to be proven from a reason with three characteristics. Seeing the meaning to be inferred from the reason with three characteristics that will be explained, that is inference for oneself. This is the same as the previous result. Just as the two discriminations arising from direct perception are said to be the result, it is the same for this inference. If both are of the nature of discrimination, then what is the difference between these two? The object and the nature, the two are not the same. The objects of direct perception and inference are different, in terms of their aspects and differences. Their natures are also different. If one asks why inference is only divided into two categories? This is because: the nature should be indicated, the objects to be taken are different. Direct perception and inference, etc., like their natures, the things to be taken are also different. If one names the things of direct perception, then through these two words it will become inference. If one sees that in some cases, inference applies to the things of direct perception.

For example, if it is said that it is like touch arising from form, if that is the case, then when seeing, it is not possible to infer that thing as if it were directly perceived. Why? Because, other than that, the so-called "other than that" refers to inferring touch from the cause of having seen it before. Like this, the form itself is separated from the appearance of direct perception, and it is the general characteristic of form that infers the general characteristic of touch. Because the specific differences of touch made directly perceptible are not to be shown, it is not possible for the objects of the two valid cognitions (direct perception and inference) to become one. If, like this, because the term "seeing," etc., is used for seeing, etc., how can direct perception be shown? There is no contradiction to this, because there it is also said: Seeing, etc., are shown through their own doors, which is to speak of their own nature. Seeing! Hearing! Knowing! These things are expressed through the door of the word of reason, but not through their own nature. Like this, the eye consciousness sees the object to be seen, and the mind consciousness knows it as it knows blue. It is said, "This is blue." There it is also said: Because it is known from the name, the forms are different; the two forms of consciousness should be known. Because the eye consciousness experiences something different from non-blue, the mind consciousness is able to obtain it, so when naming it, it is said that there are two forms of consciousness. Because it has been said that "one's own characteristic is not to be known," therefore, the nature of the object to be understood is the object of direct perception, and it is clearly expressed that the general characteristic is the object of inference, so it is clearly expressed. If it is like this, it should not be said that all inferences have general characteristics as their objects. Why? Because it is also seen in non-general characteristics. The so-called "also in non-general characteristics" refers to inferring the nature of the seen wind, etc., by touch, etc. It is also said that touch is not of the seen touches, etc. If this is said, that is not the case, because what is indicated is the general characteristic. The inference of wind, etc., is not, because it is the basis of the qualities of touch, etc., and is it because it is the indicator?
