Commentary on the Compendium on Valid Cognition by Dignāga Commentary on the Compendium on Valid Cognition by Dignāga In Sanskrit: Pramāṇasamuccaya Vṛtti. In Tibetan: Commentary on the Compendium on Valid Cognition. Homage to the Buddha! Having become the standard, wishing to benefit sentient beings, The Teacher, the Sugata, the Protector, having paid homage, In order to establish validity, from all my own treatises, Having gathered and unified the various scattered points here. Here, also, at the beginning of the explanation, praising the Blessed One by virtue of being the standard due to the perfection of cause and effect is for the purpose of generating respect. Therein, the cause is the perfection of intention and action. Intention is the wish to benefit sentient beings. Action is showing the teachings to sentient beings. The result is the perfection of one's own and others' benefit. One's own benefit is perfected by the Sugata himself, and three meanings should be taken closely. The meaning of being extremely beautiful is like a man with a handsome appearance. The meaning of irreversibility is like a plague being completely cured. The meaning of being complete is like a vase being completely filled. These three meanings are also for the purpose of distinguishing one's own benefit from the desires of outsiders, those in training, and those beyond training. The perfection of others' benefit is the Protector himself, by virtue of the meaning of deliverance. Having paid homage to such a Teacher with qualities, in order to accomplish validity, having gathered together here from one's own treatises such as the "Door of Reasoning," the Compendium on Valid Cognition will be composed. In order to refute the validity of others and to express the qualities of one's own validity, and because the realization of what is to be measured depends on validity, there are also many inverted understandings of this. Therefore, perception and inference are only two valid cognitions. Why? Because two characteristics are to be measured. Other than the self-characteristic and the general characteristic, there is nothing else to be measured. That which has the self-characteristic as its object is perception, and that which has the general characteristic as its object is inference, so it should be known. If, with aspects such as "this is impermanent," one grasps colors and so forth, and once

How then does apprehension occur? Although such apprehension exists, it is because of the elaboration of the object to be measured that other valid cognition does not arise. Without differentiating between self-character and general character, and grasping color and so forth from the color itself, one mentally elaborates on impermanence and so forth, thinking that the general characteristic is that color and so forth are impermanent. Therefore, it is not another valid cognition. Nor is it repeated knowledge, for although there is a separate recognition of the same object more than once, even so, it is not another valid cognition. Why? Because it would become endless. If all knowledge is considered valid cognition, then valid cognition would become endless, like memory and so forth. Memory is memory itself. For example, like memory, desire, hatred, and so forth, it is not another valid cognition for objects previously cognized. In that case, direct perception is free from conceptual thought. Whatever knowledge is without conceptual thought is direct perception. What is meant by conceptual thought? It is the association with names, genera, and so forth. For conventional sounds, objects are expressed by distinguishing names, such as the name "Lha Jin"; for sounds of genera, such as "cow"; for sounds of qualities, expressed by qualities, such as "white"; for sounds of actions, expressed by actions, such as "cooking"; and for sounds of substances, expressed by substances, such as "one with a stick," "one with horns," and so forth. Some say that these are sounds that distinguish relations. Others think that objects are distinguished and expressed only by empty sounds. Whatever is without those conceptual thoughts is direct perception. Why does it rely on two? Because the consciousness that arises depends on the sense faculty, not on the object. Why not on the object? Because it is a common cause. The designation of that is from the sense faculty, not from the object, such as form and so forth. In this way, the object is also common to the mental consciousness of other continuums. It is also seen that uncommon things are designated, such as the sound of a drum and the sprout of a mustard seed. Therefore, it is reasonable that direct perception is free from conceptual thought. Dharma Abhidharma.
