It is like saying, "What need is there to speak of a cliff?" To strive to rise is to desire to be liberated from the cliff and darkness. To maintain virtues such as discipline without interruption is like a bamboo pole or a straight guide, like a rope or a hook. To abandon the intermediate is to discard it. If it is discarded, what fault will there be? "Those" is half a verse. To explain how to practice the path, proper attention is "whoever" this verse. Those who seek liberation, do they live alone? Or, using the word "also," even if they live in a crowd, it is acceptable. To examine carefully with the mind means to think, "Which of my three doors of body, speech, and mind will tend towards?" After examining in this way, if the three doors tend towards virtue, then associate with virtue; if they tend towards two, then one should turn back from evil, which is what the phrase "true action" indicates. True action is virtuous action. Together means in all times and places. To accompany together means that for the sake of virtue, one does not abandon it even at the cost of one's life. Or it means learning to tend towards virtue. Then, what benefit will one obtain? "On the earth" is two lines. "In the middle of the earth" means in the center of people. To become the chief is to practice virtue. To become the supreme is to abandon non-virtue. Or, discipline is to cause the unobtained to be obtained, and to cause the obtained not to be lost, these are two words and in order. The supreme disciple is the one who receives the precepts. The lama is the one who gives the precepts. One will become revered, because the disciple offers the lama the offerings of practice. Knowing shame is "shame" this verse. For example, a mother nurtures her son's body, the lineage is noble, she does not deceive her son, she is loving to her son, she follows her son, she speaks the truth to her son, she has great principles for her son, she is happy to raise her son, she has overwhelming majesty that subdues maids and so on, she would rather give up her own life than abandon her son, just like possessing these ten qualities, knowing shame is also like that. Those who know shame will easily give up their own lives, but they will not abandon the vows they have made. For example, in the sutra, when the daughter of a bhikshu asks her bhikshu father, she tells the great story of giving up her own life for the sake of discipline.

What exists is the verse "for the time being." If one breaks vows, what will be the consequences? It is said, "for the time being, everyone will punish," meaning that whether friend, enemy, or neutral, all will proclaim the offense. The destination of sin is the evil realms, which arise from non-virtue. Losing one's true nature means falling away from previous liberation, Dharma, and material enjoyment. For the wise, the greatest suffering on earth is the breaking of vows. What other suffering is there besides that? Showing the fault of not practicing the path, one will be deceived by craving, which is the verse "whoever." The path of Dharma is the three vehicles, because it is to be traversed by beings of three capacities. Vast means the benefit is extremely vast. Or it means the Mahayana. If abandoned, what will be the consequences? It is the two lines "ocean of samsara." Like the impermanent movements of a dancer's body. Joy is subsequent attachment. Being deceived means falling away from higher realms and liberation. One will wander in samsara, which is the verse "whoever samsara." Constant change is the shifting from one life form to another. Merely clinging means obtaining the objects of the five desires. Equal means gods and humans. Unequal means beings in the lower realms. If one wanders, what will be the consequences? Showing that one will be tormented by suffering, first taking humans as an example, the suffering in the womb is the verse "extremely unbearable." Showing the suffering of birth, extremely narrow, which is the two lines "that is." Not abandoning life, which is the two lines "however." Tormented by impurity, which is the two lines "impure." Body and mind weaken, which is the two lines "harm." Abandoning previous memories means forgetting the suffering in the womb. The suffering of childhood is the two lines "body." Unable to engage in all intimate activities means that one cannot fully accomplish the deeds of body, speech, and mind. Showing the suffering of adulthood, actions decline, which is the two lines "in adulthood." Venomous snake refers to desire and so on. Changed abode means acting as a support.
