Other wealth that is famous in the world is meaningless, empty, and false, because it is not the cause of pacifying afflictions, and it is common. Thus, after explaining the accumulation of the wealth of the noble ones, in order not to waste it, gambling and so on are mentioned. Among them, gambling refers to various forms such as dicing. Watching gatherings refers to the gathering of many ordinary people at festivals and other occasions. Laziness refers to not being interested in doing good deeds. A bad friend refers to someone who, relying on someone, does not engage in virtue but engages in non-virtue. Alcohol refers to brewed alcohol and mixed alcohol. Wandering at night refers to going to other people's homes and villages after sunset. These six are the cause of downfall, because relying on them, enjoyment, livelihood, and virtuous Dharma will decline. The cause of downfall is called downfall, just as medicine is called life. The sutra says, "O son of a householder, these six are the gates of downfall." There, it is clearly understood to be the meaning of cause. "Decline of fame" shows their other faults. Because it is so, one should abandon them by completely abandoning the way of especially enjoying them. Again, in order to counteract external wealth, in order to show other methods of being free from all afflictions, it is said, "Among all wealth," etc. In terms of all external wealth such as gold, the wealth of contentment is the most excellent, and it is said to be particularly superior. Who knows? It is the teacher of gods and humans, that is, the synonym of the Buddha Bhagavan. Because the Bhagavan said so, you should contemplate following the teachings of the Tathagata and be content. If one is content, what are the merits? It is said, "A contented person, even without wealth, is truly rich." "Na" means "because." "Without wealth" means without wealth such as gold. That is also because of contentment that one is truly rich, and the fruit of wealth is

Because of being content. Even if one has no wealth, if one is content, one should understand that even in poverty, one is only possessing wealth. What is contentment? It is not regretting the past, not desiring the future, and not being overly attached to what is happening now. That is the Dharma of contentment. Therefore, this is called contentment. Having thus explained the virtues of contentment, in order to show the faults of those who are not content, it is said, "Having many possessions," and so on. "To accept thereby" means to accumulate. Those who possess many utensils and other possessions, how to protect and hide them, and so on, and even if they are wasted, suffering arises. But for those who do not possess many utensils, it is not like that. How is it known? It is said, "How many heads do the best of nagas have?" and so on. For example, if a naga has seven heads, then the suffering arising from those heads is also that much. If it has three, then it is very little. If it has one, then it is very, very little. Similarly, through the difference in possessions, one should understand the difference in suffering. For those who live in a household, it is not contradictory to fully possess a woman. Therefore, in order to show the method of being without afflictions by examining the faults and virtues of these women, it is said, "Naturally connected to an enemy," and so on. "Naturally connected to and possessing an enemy" is the meaning of this phrase. Such a wife is like an executioner, therefore she should be abandoned. Among them, a natural enemy is one who desires to kill what is born. "Despising the household" means that because you despise me, you are despising the household. Such a woman is like a ogress, therefore she should also be abandoned. What kind of wife should one take? It is said, "Following like a sister," and so on. Just as a sister follows her brother and does not contradict his words, so whatever wife follows her husband is worthy of respect.

Just as a husband cherishes his wife, serving her in various ways and feeling joy in his heart, so too should the wife who is loved by the husband be respected. Just as a mother wishes her son to be free from physical and mental suffering, always thinking of benefiting him, so too should the wife who wishes to benefit her husband be respected. To rule like a slave, just as a slave is completely subject to the master's pleasure and displeasure, so too should the wife who is completely subject to her husband be respected. These four types of wives are called the gods of the family, because they are the cause of the family's non-decline. From here onwards, in order to accord with Samadhi, the practice of meditation is explained. The two most important dharmas in meditation are: moderation in food and diligence without sleep. First, with regard to moderation in food, food should be treated reasonably, like medicine. Because the body is like a wound. For example, medicine should be neither too little nor too much, but beneficial if taken in moderation. Similarly, food should also be moderate, neither too little nor too much, so that it can nourish the body and not cause harm. This passage uses "reasonably" to explain this principle. Food should be eaten avoiding greed and hatred. This means that the consumption of any food should be avoided in association with greed and hatred. If someone eats in order to gain weight, or to become stronger, this is driven by greed. If someone eats in order to show off, because the consequence of showing off is to harm others, this is driven by hatred. Gaining weight is just a physical and mental change caused by greed. Stronger refers to the growth of limbs and organs. Showing off refers to ability and strength. Food should be eaten in order to maintain the body, for the continuation of life.
