Because there is no (untruth). If done in this way, even if one speaks harsh words that are not true, it will not become lying, because it is impossible for two thoughts to exist simultaneously. How does one speak harsh words? Because one has a mind of hearing, wanting to cause suffering to others, speaking words when the meaning is clear, that is speaking harsh words. When the meaning is not clear, it becomes idle talk. How does one speak idle talk? If one speaks any other words with a afflicted mind, except for the three, such as lying, then that is speaking idle talk. These three paths of action are also like lying, the body also does them, and the difference in sin should also be understood as the same as lying. How does it become covetousness? If one generates desire for the possessions of others, then it becomes covetousness. How is it harmful intent? If one is angry with other sentient beings, then it becomes harmful intent. How does it become wrong view? If one is certain that there are no results of good and bad actions, then it becomes wrong view. The difference in sin of these three paths of action should be understood from the difference in thought alone, while covetousness is considered to have a difference in sin also because of the object. Because one abandons these ten unwholesome paths of action, one should cultivate the ten wholesome paths of action. The meaning of "abstain from alcohol" is that although alcohol is the cause of great faults, merely drinking it is not unwholesome, therefore it is not mentioned in the paths of action, therefore it is shown separately as a prohibition. The majority of the saying is that although alcohol intoxicates without distinction, it should be understood from the difference in cause. Brewed alcohol has three types: sugarcane alcohol, rice flour alcohol, and honey alcohol. Mixed alcohol should be understood as pressed from flowers, etc. For virtuous livelihood, it should also be combined with "joy," virtuous livelihood refers to any action that does not harm others. Like this, virtuous

To show that one should give alms as one's possessions allow, while dwelling on the earth, therefore, it is said, "Enjoyment is wavering," and so on. Because it is to be enjoyed, enjoyment is a euphemism for the things to be given, such as food and drink. Those enjoyments are also unstable, so they are wavering. Because one does not know satisfaction, it is meaningless, and this causes attachment to enjoyments to cease. "Having known" means having realized. "Bhikkhu," and so on, shows the three fields of giving: the field of the place of giving is the renunciates and brahmins; the field of compassion is the poor; the field of benefit is the friends. "Properly" shows that one should be respectful. This is because it is the cause of a single maturation that is pleasing. The Blessed One said, "Bhikkhus, the maturation of those who respectfully offer alms will be to experience desirable desires, joy, satisfaction, each separately." There is no better friend than giving. This shows that giving is a great benefit. Therefore, it should be understood that one should rely on giving here. To show that one should not be attached to enjoyments, one should properly take and guard the precepts, therefore, it is said, "Your precepts are not broken nor degraded," and so on. Among these, not broken is because one has not transgressed even one of the precepts that were properly taken. Transgressing one precept will break the precepts, and transgressing many precepts will become defective. To show that neither of these exists, it is said, "Not broken nor degraded," a defective precept is degraded. As for not mixed, a mixed precept is unwholesome, that is, abiding in a guide, and because it does not exist, it is not mixed. Not defiled is because one has not completely relied on the purpose of existence and enjoyment. This precept itself does not change into another form, so it is called unspotted, and spotting shows another form. Possessing the qualities of not broken, and so on.

Whatever morality is, it is also having independence, because it is liberated from the slavery of craving. For that very reason, morality is praised by the wise and noble ones, and it is also a means of accomplishing samadhi, because it keeps the mind endowed with morality from weakening and abiding. You should rely on such morality. Why? Because it is said, "Morality is like the earth, the basis for the moving and unmoving." The word "is" means "like this." Just as the earth is the cause of the birth, dwelling, and increase of those who move and do not move, so too, morality is the basis and support of all qualities such as samadhi. This shows the result of making a person of morality because of generating respect. Thus, for the time being, generosity and morality have been generally explained. Now, in order to introduce the Mahayana, in order to explain those things that are included in the perfections, such as generosity, it is said, "Generosity and morality," and so on. Among them, because of generating the mind of enlightenment, in order to benefit all sentient beings, generosity is the perfection of generosity, and the perfections of morality and so on should also be understood in the same way. Patience here is considered to be two kinds of patience: the patience of not being angry at harm done by others, and the patience of enduring suffering. Diligence is the willingness to seek the Dharma of the Buddhas for the sake of sentient beings. Meditation is the fourth dhyana that is practiced for the benefit of sentient beings and that bodhisattvas accomplish samadhi. Wisdom is that which makes one know all things as they truly are, and the good explanation that thoroughly shows sentient beings the meaning without error. Such wisdom is called immeasurable because it is not possessed by shravakas and so on. The phrase "expand these perfections" means to practice these perfections. Why? Because it has been said, "Cross the ocean of existence to the other shore, and attain the power of the victorious ones." Therefore, practice the perfections.
