Just as a lamp in a room without moving, focusing one's mind is called samadhi. As it is said in the scriptures, such as the abiding of the mind and the correct abiding. Or, correctly placing the mind on one form, one action, one door, one object. This is also the characteristic of one-pointedness of mind, abiding in order to completely pacify the suffering of afflictions. This is the basis of arising from no regret, great joy, contentment, and extreme pliancy. This is one form by the characteristic of one-pointedness of mind. In terms of the distinction between mundane and supramundane, there are two forms: that which is fully endowed with the limbs of enlightenment is supramundane, and other than that are mundane. Furthermore, correct samadhi has two forms: one-pointedness of mind on virtue is correct samadhi, and one-pointedness of mind on non-virtue is incorrect samadhi. In addition, there are two types: predicted and unpredicted. Predicted is virtue, and unpredicted is non-virtue. The reverse of these two is unpredicted. Some others explain samadhi as two types: access samadhi and attainment samadhi. Among these samadhis, that which is close to the former part is access samadhi, and for those who follow the same kind of dharma, it is attainment samadhi. There are also two forms: with joy and without joy. With joy are the first dhyana, the second dhyana, and their access samadhi, as well as the samadhi that abides by relying on them. Without joy are the dhyanas above that, and the access samadhi, and the samadhi that abides by relying on them. There are also two: engaging in the form realm and engaging in the formless realm. Engaging in the form realm are the four dhyanas of learners and ordinary beings, as well as their access samadhi, and the samadhi that abides by relying on them. Engaging in the formless realm are those who engage in the formless realm. There are also two types: with aspiration and without aspiration. The limbs of enlightenment

Wishing is what accomplishes existence without possessing the means. Abandoning existence together with the limbs of enlightenment is what is without maturation. Again, there are three aspects: merely with investigation and analysis, only with analysis and without investigation, and neither with investigation nor with analysis. Among these, that with investigation and analysis is the first dhyana and its attainment. That with only analysis and without investigation is the special dhyana of the first dhyana and its attainment. That without investigation and without analysis is the second dhyana and so forth, its approximation, and its attainments. Furthermore, there are four types of samadhi: declining, abiding, excelling, and having the potential for definite discrimination. Moreover, there are four that are made subject to aspiration, effort, mind, and analysis. Through the distinctions of its object, aspect, small, medium, and large, there are many types of samadhi. That is, it is not very brief, nor is it extensive, but rather, residing in a stage of gradual progression, only these are distinguished and established. That is, like the four dhyanas, their three approximations, the four formless realms, the six recollections, the four immeasurables, the recollection of exhaling and inhaling, the ten perceptions, the ten kasinas, the eight overcoming spheres, the eight liberations, overcoming, the attainment of non-perception, the three samadhis such as emptiness and wishlessness, entering into samadhi with perceptions that are in accordance with what is in accordance with, the three emptinesses, the five limbs, and the samadhis that are together with the five consciousnesses. Thus, after a yogi has truly understood these collections of samadhi from the perspective of scripture and meaning, in order to perfect them, one should rely on a virtuous friend, or a preceptor, or an instructor, or a co-practitioner who possesses the complete qualities of the fourteen topics of speech, or rely on someone who can hear, who can completely purify what has been heard, and who can dispel doubts.
