Also the hermit himself, and the one without concealment himself! Therefore, vowing and conforming to this, because one dwells in this solitary place, therefore he is a solitary place dweller. His very nature is the solitary place dweller himself. The vow also starts from there, abandoning dwelling on the edge of the village, and dwelling in the solitary place. For the remaining merits that are practiced, one abandons what is incompatible with them in order. For this, the qualities of the solitary place dweller himself are as follows: Dwelling in a solitary place, manifest joy, samadhi, one is able to attain or completely protect. Those who dwell in villages, due to the faults of distraction, their minds are destroyed, and they cannot attain tranquility. Dwelling in that very place, in the broom heap, the remaining behaviors are adorned through practice, like a battlefield equipped with bows and arrows, shields, and armor, possessing abundant weapons, like a battle. Even if one falls asleep in a solitary place, because one dwells in a solitary place, it is an act that pleases the Sugatas. Even if one dwells in a village very equanimously, it is difficult to maintain comfort there for a long time. Regarding friends, encounters, and one's own life, and even the beloved body, without regard, in the remote solitary place, one strives diligently, what qualities will one not attain? Various musical instruments, sounds, and songs, and various things that cause distraction, are not present in the solitary place, therefore, the mind is also beneficial for yoga, and practice relies on this. Similarly, the broom heap dweller himself is also like that, because the vow comes first, therefore he has the posture of holding the broom heap, therefore he is the broom heap dweller. His very nature is the broom heap dweller himself. The broom heap dweller is also, because he dwells like a wall in the villages and garbage heaps, and among his relatives and intermediate garbage heaps, he is equal and superior to those, therefore he is the broom heap dweller. Or, because the broom heap dweller condemns worldly people, therefore he is the broom heap. Through the ritual of vows, abandoning the clothes given by householders, accumulating broom heaps, being very peaceful, and possessing the glory of contentment, he is the broom heap dweller. That is, dwelling in a solitary place, with a contented mind, wearing clothes that are even lower than the inferior, one will not have strong attachment to this, and due to fear and conflict

Will not become ignorant. It enables others to understand the merit of contentment, And the mind is only very joyful. The mind turns away from the desire for extravagance, And for the sake of obtaining it, it does not generate suffering. Even if lost, one will not grieve afterwards, Because it is not difficult to find in rags. Because of the clothes, association with householders, Will not cause one to fall away from the activities of the Dharma. It does not arouse suspicion from thieves, The effort of guarding will not destroy it. From this, harm from the directions will not arise, It will not be ruined by wrong livelihood. This practice is what occurred in the past, The Buddhas also follow it. Striving to overcome the power of the demons, It is like a warrior wearing armor. The golden light shines, marked with swans and white, Radiant, if abandoned, the king also imitates it. Therefore, worshiped by gods and humans, Who would not vow to wear rags? Wearing simple clothes, possessing a moon-like radiance, Desirable and beautiful clothes, Whoever holds rags, That peaceful perfection will not waver. Being taught by thousands of Arhats, This noble attainment is blameless. Relying on the peaceful, glorious, and praiseworthy ones, Who would not rejoice in rags? Having renounced and abiding in whatever place, He who acts as he speaks is beautiful. Whoever has made a vow with this, To uphold it in that way is excellent. Contentment increases, because it is a great wealth, Therefore the Dharma will become perfect. The words of contentment will greatly increase contentment, Even the lowest of the low are satisfied with clothes. Other teachers say that abiding in a state of possessing natural Dharma robes, one vows to be a rag-wearer, but that is because one has not abandoned the clothes obtained from householders, and merely accomplishes things with words. To enjoy and keep clothes obtained from householders for many years, and to say that one is a rag-wearer, is merely following along. Therefore, the so-called almsman is so called because the one who has vowed abandons invitations and wanders for alms. Alms is begging for a mouthful of food.
