Not all things that are the basis of all qualities. If you ask what the world is like? The answer is, it is "without characteristics." Characteristics refer to women and so on, and are the factors for expressing and knowing these things. If there is something that has no characteristics, then that is without characteristics, which is a synonym for "emptiness." If you ask in what situation is it without characteristics? The answer is, like a mirage. Just as a mirage is empty of the form of water, so too is this world empty of all the forms in which it appears. Just as a mirage looks like water, but if you look closely, it is neither the essence of water, nor is the mirage itself a thing with essence. Similarly, the aggregates, which are like water, are not real in the ultimate sense. Therefore, they are not the nature of self, nor are they the pus of the aggregates. For such dharmas, if someone is attached, that is very foolish, and is a samsaric being. This is indicated by the last two verses. Thinking that a mirage is water, there, that "there" refers to the mirage. Things that are close to a mirage are called the sound of a mirage, such as the Ganges of the Ganges shore. If you come from the direction close to the mirage, but think that there is no water here. That's what is being said. If sometimes you see water in a mirage, then because you see water in some places, you can say that there is no water here. If at any time there is absolutely no water, then thinking that there is no water there shows that you are very foolish. Similarly, like a mirage, in reality it is like a mirage. That's what is being said, it's not like that in name. If because of the power of things, existence is abandoned, and thus becomes non-existence, then why not become existence because of abandoning non-existence? If someone thinks, for the time being, in the state of nirvana, because there is non-discriminating wisdom, it will also change like that. Then, the path of the method to obtain the state of individual ordinary beings, or what exists in other things

If it is thought that whatever has been abandoned must be refuted by the power of the thing itself, then that is a synonym for "straightforward" or "acceptable." Since in this way, by that method, the very absence widely prevents meaning, therefore it is said, "For the emptiness of meaning, do not take vows," and so forth, in order to establish emptiness by the power of meaning. Or, if taking vows and so forth does not refer to "absence," then all of these indicate that "this does not exist." Taking vows is to acknowledge that there is no other world and so forth, and if everything is acknowledged verbally, then that does not exist for us. If one does not do that for fear of worldly gossip, then there would be conduct characterized by misdeeds of body and speech. However, that does not exist for those who are adorned with the qualities of pure conduct, such as diligently engaging in meditation and recitation. If, fearing the loss of gain and respect, one abandons misdeeds and merely engages in virtuous conduct, while the mind abides in the view of emptiness, then it is said, "Since the mind is the support of enlightenment, it is empty." Enlightenment is unsurpassed wisdom. Because sects are not allowed in this meaning. "How" means by what cause. This is what is said and proclaimed by those who are possessed by the demon of objects. These two verses show that this Dharma is not common to all those who have objects. Or, "Not relying on two, one becomes liberated." Since no one has spoken this meaning, why is it said? For this previous aspect, the concluding verse is spoken. If there is a nature of speaking of persons and aggregates here, then they are spoken of as such. The sage Kapila is called a Samkhya because he enumerates, and his disciples, the Kapilavastu, are also called Samkhyas. The owl is a gleaner, because it eats gleanings and acts like an owl. His disciples are called owl-children because they are like sons. Clothes are worn. These are so called because they are without clothes, meaning naked. For the Samkhyas, owl-children, and those without clothes
