A Detailed Explanation of the Precious Garland. Mipham Geshe. A Detailed Explanation of the Precious Garland. Mipham Geshe. In Indian language: Ratnāvalīṭīkā. In Tibetan: A Detailed Explanation of the Precious Garland. I prostrate to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! For hundreds of thousands of eons, One who is difficult to see and find, Whose mind is unobstructed in all meanings, Having prostrated to the Great Hero, I, desiring merit, Will determine the meaning of The precious Dharma garland, Created by the one who sees the truth. For sentient beings who delight in brevity, For the sake of those great beings, He has gathered and taught The meaning of the profound and vast sutras. Here, the venerable noble Nāgārjuna, wishing to benefit all the world, made King Pleasant Conduct the subject and vowed to compose the holy Dharma Precious Garland, in accordance with the conduct of the holy ones. Starting with "From all faults," etc., he composes the prostration, which precedes the praise of the qualities of the Blessed One, the Buddha, and includes the necessity. What is the necessity here? It is that by making prostrations that precede the praise of the qualities of the Blessed One's immeasurable qualities, a very great merit will be generated, and thus the meaning that one wishes to express will be accomplished without effort. For the time being, this is one. Here, the audience can also be divided into two types. Among them, those who follow with faith focus on the prostration that precedes the praise of qualities, thinking that this was done by the Sugata, and engage in listening, etc., with faith alone. Those who follow the Dharma, the proclaimers, if they are famous and virtuous, also aim for the prostration with special qualities, thinking like this. Because others do not have this special quality, they think that this is a prostration to the lamp of all the world. Those with such a definite mind generate great joy, and those who are skilled in such words think like this. For the time being, if other faithful ones do not make the effort to prostrate to others for fear of the decline of refuge in the Three Jewels, then the noble Nāgārjuna has attained unwavering faith in the vision of truth.

What need is there to mention anything else? Like this, one should not speak of those mutually contradictory dharmas that are completely conceived by the tenets of the Tirthikas. Thus, in the end, it will be said: "Solely expounding virtuous dharma." Therefore, I think that this undoubtedly accords with attaining the supreme benefit of individuals. Then, one will begin to engage in listening to this, and so forth. Those who are not preceded by conceptual thought and have not been proclaimed, upon hearing the praise of the qualities of prostration, will awaken with a sense of wonder and thus engage in contemplation or listening. Then, they will notice the good meaning here, and believing that someone has well-spoken such a meaning, they will develop faith in the Bhagavan Buddha Shakyamuni and acknowledge him as the teacher, in order to make the teacher most certain for them. Therefore, the prostration that precedes the expression of qualities is done because it is accompanied by doubt about both. It should be said: "The noble ones also enter in just that way." Now, one should explain the meaning as much as possible. Among them, faults refer to aspects that are incompatible with qualities, such as desire, etc., because they make the continuum of body and mind become bad. The word "all" (ཀུན།) refers to everything because of the intention to express it. These are both faults and all, so it is like that. Liberation (རྣམ་གྲོལ།) means not possessing, that is, the meaning of separation. Qualities refer to wisdom, etc., because they are what those who seek good meaning should be close to and accustomed to. Here, the word "all" (ཀུན།) should also be understood as before. One who is adorned with these is excellent. These do not refer to displaying wealth with the ornaments of men, such as bracelets, armlets, and bangles, etc. As it is said elsewhere: "Trees are adorned with flowers, rain clouds with garlands of lightning, lakes with full-blown lotuses, sentient beings with the qualities of obtaining excellence." If that is the case, wouldn't it become the fault of reversing the order? Faults are like darkness, and they also depend on the absence of the appearance of the light of qualities.
