1. Then, the chief of joy and desire, Though steadfast, is afflicted by sorrow. The lord of the great assembly, the lion, Thought and repeated: The heretics of the wrong path have been defeated, Who, having departed on such a path, Has shown the sacred path, And having departed, will not return? The afflicted, those who have become weak, Having abandoned the ignorant world, Having made beings without a protector, That protector has departed for peace. The chief of yogis, the supreme lama, Having turned towards ultimate peace, Like radiance from the exhaustion of life, My steadfastness will decline. Like one who does not protect evil sounds falling from the heavens, Endowed with miraculous powers, also falls. Separated from that, it becomes a laughing matter, What is there to do on earth that is not known? Like one exhausted by heat seeking water, Like one afflicted by cold seeking fire. For beings who cut off doubt, Who will they rely on now? Like a bellows for increasing fire, Who will blow the bellows for the sake of virtue? When the teacher of the world, the capable one, Declines, the Dharma also declines. Bound by meaningless and evil ways, Those who are subject to old age and death, The great wheel of suffering, Who else is there to destroy it? The Sindhur tree that has withered, Like a treasure of water at the end of spring. The arrogant and proud people, Who will satisfy them with eloquent speech? Where the heart of the lama, the Mount Meru, Even the all-knowing one declines, In this world of intelligent beings, Who is there to rely on and go to? How does one protect secret conduct, Yet lead to the realm of death? Likewise, the suffering of the living world, Arises for the sake of bondage. Just as a sharp saw, Cuts down trees and causes them to fall. Likewise, this assembly that has declined, The sharp saw also causes it to fall. Having burned all the afflictions, Though endowed with the power of wisdom, The supreme teacher of beings, Has departed because of decline. The evil water of evil-minded animals, The waves of existence, the dust like fish, Who, with the great boat of wisdom, Will cross the ocean of existence? The branches of old age, the flowers of disease, The root of death, the sprout of existence, Who, with the great weapon of wisdom, Will cut down the tree of existence? Born from the friction of ignorance, The flames of desire burn there.

Nga. Who extinguished the fire of faults with the cool water of wisdom? Who walked the path of peace? Who abandoned the great darkness? Who knew the supreme goodness, and having known, taught with compassion? Surely, all afflictions come to an end, seeing peace everywhere, the all-knowing one benefits all, abandoning all, he goes forth intentionally. Possessing a soft and vast voice, the long-armed, great capable one, if at the end, whose end? Not to be born, not already born. In the pasture monasteries, having seen water, travelers along with their purpose are confused, so the swift and wise, therefore, should approach the Dharma. Because of decay, there is no difference, having known that sin is impermanent, whoever does not sleep in the Dharma, even when lying down, does not sleep. Then, the lion among men, the one who can eat wisdom, that one, disparaging the faults of birth, praises the exhaustion of existence. Wanting to abandon the root of existence, wanting to take up pure asceticism, wanting to subdue the wavering mind, wanting to abide on the path of virtue. Wanting to walk the path of peace, wanting to cross the ocean of existence, always wanting to give charity, wanting to cut off rebirth. Giving charity and abandoning pride, contemplating the Dharma and going to peace. When the capable one wishes to pass into Nirvana, he thinks of the earth as empty. Then, with the entire body, turning back like the two-drinking king, while looking at the city, the capable one spoke thus: This body of mine, the vast one, is your last sight. At the dwelling place of the giants, at the time of the end of life, go forth to enter Nirvana. Then, seeing those who are respectful and desire the Dharma, those who have come near, the capable one approved of their virtuous deeds. Then, gradually, the guide, approaching the city of enjoyment, the all-knowing one who dwells there, explicitly spoke to the monks: Now or after my passing, one should be extremely devoted to the Dharma, this is your supreme meaning, anything else will become tiring. Whoever does not enter the Sutra Pitaka, and is not apparent in the Vinaya Pitaka, is individually harmful to reason, that should not be taken up in any way, that is neither Dharma nor Vinaya.
