He who has done, is doing, and will do, The supreme fruit of approaching the holy being. He has attained, is attaining, and will attain it. Having offered to the ascetic who dwells, Or having prostrated to the relics of the completely extinguished one, If the joy of the mind is the same, then the fruit is the same. Wise ones, know the qualities of the Buddhas, Therefore, always know the supreme Dharma. He who has attained the supreme, unchanging, immutable, and complete, The compassionate Sage, the great wise one, Is worthy of offerings, offering to the supreme, the holy one has come. Endowed with supreme compassion, knowing the supreme mind, For the sake of benefiting others, he has come laboring supremely, By knowing the nature of actions, the holy wise ones, Why should there not be gratitude and offerings here? On earth, fear is associated with death and old age, In the heavens, it is also associated with change, there is no permanence, Having known these two aspects of beings, who abides? Therefore, who is the holy one worthy of offerings? If there is birth, then suffering, which is not happiness, arises, There is no happiness greater than the happiness of no rebirth. He has attained it, and by whom it is given to beings, Therefore, who is the holy one worthy of offerings? Thus, with reverence for the supreme Sage, the Able One, Not by the qualities of the wise, not by the power of poetry, Following the teachings of the Able One, this treatise is composed, May it accomplish the benefit and happiness of all beings! The son of Golden Eye Mother from the land of Shaseta, the Bhikshu Acharya, the great poet, Endowed with speech, renowned in all directions, composed by the venerable Ashvaghosa, In the great poem "The Deeds of the Buddha," the chapter on the distribution of relics, the twenty-eighth chapter, is complete.
