Everywhere, fierce fires blazed. The trees abandoned their accumulated trunks, and the mountains relinquished their peaks. Like a stone cave filled with wind, the sky resounded with the harsh sounds of war drums. Then, as all things moved in such a way, in an instant, in the human world, as well as in the heavens and the sky, after arising from that great Samadhi, the Great Sage Shakyamuni Buddha spoke these words: Like a chariot whose lifeline is broken, abandoning life, the body must be guided by inner strength. Like opening the birthplace of an egg, one must liberate life together from the bonds of existence. In the great poem called "Acts of the Buddha," this is the twenty-third chapter concerning the blessing of the act of prolonging life. Then, seeing that action, the Venerable Ananda's hairs stood on end, and he exclaimed, "What has happened?" He began to tremble and was no longer joyful. To the omniscient, logically skilled wise one, he inquired about the reason for this. Then, the Buddha spoke to him in a voice like that of an intoxicated elephant: What is the reason for your agitation? Because I am abandoning this life, and three months have been fully counted, after blessing it, it can be sustained. Hearing this, the Venerable Ananda, like a pool of water in a sandalwood forest stirred by an elephant, shed tears and became agitated. Because he was a certain friend, because he was a teacher, because he was not without desire, he felt pain, repeatedly contemplating in compassion, without any joy in his heart. Hearing of the Protector's certain departure, as if my body were about to fall, all my directions lost their splendor, and the Dharma I had heard became blurred. Like fire to those afflicted by snow, in the Dharma of aging and decay, alas, the swift one praised by people, the Tathagata will pass into Nirvana. In the great wilderness forest of afflictions, for those who possess a wasted body, the extremely swift one who knows the path, the guide will surely disappear. For us who have deeply entered the distant path, full of craving, the cool pond of water on the path will dry up very quickly. Wisdom matures like a peaceful shepherd, seeing the past, future, and present, is the wisdom of

Severing the world's, eyes will surely close. Surely in the growth of crops, water for those who toil in seeking things, becoming rain swiftly, the cloud that gives water will disappear. Those robbed by the darkness of ignorance, sentient beings who have lost their way, the lamp of great clarity, will extinguish very quickly. Then, in this way, with sorrow, after afflicting Ananda's mind, the peaceful protector spoke with the supreme wisdom of that very thing. Having known the nature of beings, do not grieve, Ananda. The nature of conditioned things is impermanent, and all these beings are destined to perish. In the garden of embodied beings' strife, separated from all suffering, saying that all love is momentary, I have said before. Whatever is born as a conditioned, moving thing, arising from dependence is without freedom. Saying, 'May I become eternal,' this cannot be obtained. If the elements on earth were permanent, there would be no entering and moving, and who would accomplish the work of liberation? Therefore, it is the ultimate desire. If you or other beings, what is your attachment to me? Why is this labor born, which you have done by separating from me? The path is entirely for you all, I have shown and declared it. Hold the example of the Buddhas and teachers without concealment. My abode or nirvana, the meaning is only that much. What is the use of the body of the Tathagatas, the Dharmakaya, to you all? Therefore, slowly, after my passing, with sorrow and caution, illuminated by my lamp, may the lamp of Dharma be constant. Entering there, steadfast in diligence, and without contention, skilled in my meaning, the mind not being controlled by others, know that it is my lamp. The wise and learned one, with whose lamp, like darkness, the lamp of wisdom destroys, know that it is the lamp of Dharma. In order to attain near goodness, the realm of activity of those is peaceful, the body and feeling, self-nature, mind, and selflessness. Bound by time, skin, blood, tendons, flesh, hair, etc., seeing it as an impure body, there is no attachment to the body. Thus, thus, the feeling of entering through conditions, etc.
