Thereupon he remained. After the three stars had protected the three periods, the gods born after were in accordance. At the time of the five-three auspicious days, like the king of stars. Three were exhausted, and three were additionally obtained. The three learned disciples adorned the Sugata with three things. This concludes the seventeenth chapter, "The Great Departure of the Great Hearers," from the great poem entitled "The Deeds of the Buddha." Then, some wealthy householders generously gave wealth to those without fortune. One named "Good Giving," who was widely known, went there from the northern regions of Kosala. He heard that the Thubpa (Buddha) was residing there, and having heard this, he wished to see him, and the night was far advanced. With a pure mind, he arrived well, knowing well, and after prostrating, the Sugata taught him. "Why is it that, having meditated on the Dharma, you have renounced yourself? O wise one, desiring to see me in the night, you have arrived well. Immediately upon his arrival, you should certainly welcome this excellent guest." "Whatever good intention you have shown, and whatever of my fame, which came first?" "Whatever wisdom has entered well from the previous cause, he is a vessel of great qualities." Therefore, in the world, fame and other things, having understood that they arise from the supreme fruit of giving, having shown respect, with a nature that is balanced in time, one should give the wealth obtained from the Dharma. One should properly take up and practice discipline. Discipline itself is protection and adornment, and it is what reverses those who have gone downwards. It is certainly the perfection above the sky. Having heard the faults of seeking, etc., which are bound by "not one" in desires, having understood the qualities in the ritual of renunciation, approach the truth of birth and death that arises from liberation. Knowing well that the world, which is afflicted by death and oppressed by old age, revolves completely, strive for peace, for it is unborn. If there is no birth, there is no old age and no death. How is it that people are greatly attached to the suffering that is manifest in the nature of impermanence?

Madu is the treasury of wisdom, Likewise, the gods also have the treasury of suffering. Entering the state of permanence, no one can. Where there is impermanence, there is suffering, Where there is no self, there is also suffering. Where there is talk of "I" and talk of "mine," Then, where are impermanence, suffering, and no-self? Therefore, from suffering, observe this suffering, From characteristics, observe these characteristics. From complete pacification, know the pacification of suffering, From the path, know that your path is virtuous. Having known that this going and this moving are suffering, Like a raging fire, with the fire of desire, burn this world, Having completely realized that everything is being burned, Do not have desire for existence or non-existence. Having known emptiness, no-self, and no-mine, And this world, which is like an illusion, Having completely realized that it is merely fabrication, For this body, generate the perception of elements. The mind, having been completely shaken from the shaking of existence, Having seen the various forms of sentient beings in samsara, Without conceptualization, peaceful and true, without attachment, The mind should be equanimous, approaching the state of no characteristics. Thereafter, having heard the Dharma of the great sage, Having obtained the initial fruit of the Dharma ritual, Having obtained it, the remainder of this suffering, Is like a drop from the great ocean. Even if dwelling in the solitary place of those without attachment, Even if the formless ones dwell at the peak of existence, It is not that they cannot be seen in the forest or in the heavens, Even if dwelling at home, with right view, one becomes auspicious. With the nets of views of various forms, And the sufferings of samsara, they cannot be liberated. Therefore, before completely decaying and not seeing the truth, Having eliminated attachment, one departs in an excellent manner. That excellent view, like autumn clouds scattering a rain of stones, Dispels those bad views, Not arising from unfavorable causes such as Ishvara, Therefore, realize that the world is not without cause. Therefore, an unequal cause is not reasonable, And without a cause, there is a great contradiction. Here, through knowing with wisdom, one sees individually, Without doubt.
