Thereafter, having heard his words accurately, and having seen the unwavering form of the Great Sage, the demons who strike at the hearts of beings with arrows, their efforts were shattered and they departed with displeasure. Those who had no joy, no fruit, and labored in vain, destroyed boulders and trees, like enemies who had slain the chief of the opposing army, whereupon this army scattered in all directions. Those with flowered crests, together with their retinues, fled and were certainly defeated. When the great ascetic conquered darkness and was free from dust, like youth with radiance, like the clear sky with the moon, a rain of fragrant flowers possessing the essence of water fell. Thus, when the sinful ones were certainly defeated, at that time the directions were radiant, making the night beautiful. Showers of flowers fell from the sky to the earth, and like a youthful maiden, the night was effortlessly bright. From the great chapter called "The Conduct of the Buddha," the thirteenth chapter, "The Victory over the Maras," is complete. Then, with steadfastness and peace, having defeated the power of the Maras, desiring to fully understand the ultimate meaning, that wise meditator engaged in meditation. Having fully attained supreme mastery over all the rituals of meditation, in the first watch he remembered the sequence of previous births. 'So-and-so, I, in this existence, transmigrated from there and came here.' Thus, he remembered thousands of births, as if experiencing them. In those various existences, having remembered birth and death, then compassion arose for sentient beings. He, the embodiment of compassion, acted, having abandoned his own birth, and again what was to be done in other places. This world without a protector certainly revolves like a wheel. Thus, the nature of certainty became his remembrance: the essence of water and trees is without essence; thus is the certainty of samsara. When the second watch came, that unequaled conqueror of others, the best of all who have eyes, obtained the divine eye. Then, with that divine eye, with the completely pure divine eye, like a spotless mirror, he saw all the worlds. Through superior and inferior actions, he saw the death, transmigration, and birth of sentient beings.

Also. The embodiment of compassion increases. These are the ones with sinful deeds, All beings go to the lower realms. These other ones with virtuous deeds, Abide in the heavens. In the extremely dreadful hells, Those who are greatly terrified, These are tormented by various sufferings, Alas, they are afflicted by hunger. Some drink the fiery, Boiling molten iron. Others climb, Wailing, on the hot iron pillars. Those who are overturned in iron cauldrons, Some are cooked like porridge. In the burning piles of fire, Some pitiful ones are burned. Some are eaten by the fierce dogs, With sharp iron teeth. Some are devoured by the cruel, Iron-beaked, iron-colored crows. Some, exhausted by suffering, Desiring the shade of coolness, These enter as if bound, The green forest of sword leaves. Some are felled by axes, Their raised arms are felled like trees. Lives bound by karma, Even in suffering, cannot be liberated. For the sake of averting suffering, Whatever deeds are done as pleasure, Its result inevitably, Only suffering is experienced. Having done unwholesome deeds for pleasure, Those who are extremely miserable, By tasting the flavor of those, Do they even experience a little pleasure? Those evil ones by nature, Whatever sinful deeds are done, When that manifests, They experience the consequences. If those sinful ones, See the manifestation of karmic results, As if struck in a vital spot, Quickly vomit blood. From the sufferings of the body, And from the sufferings of hell, Associating with non-noble ones, The greatest weariness is my way. Others, from the agitation of the mind, Various karmas arising from, In various places of animals, Those newly born beings are full of suffering. For the sake of flesh, skin, fur, and teeth, Because of attachment or arrogance, Even if seen by relatives and friends, They are killed without compassion. Those powerless and helpless beings, Tormented by hunger, thirst, and fatigue, The wealthy ones beaten with iron whips, Become horses and cows.
