Because it is common, one craves suffering, like flesh that has been completely torn apart, where is happiness? For desires, who is the sentient being's joy? From enemies and relatives and kin, whoever dwells in them will quickly decline, like the senses, in those things that bring near harm, who is the sentient being's joy in desires? In mountains, forests, rivers, and oceans, whoever floats around will fall, like the fruit at the top of a tree, in those things, who is the sentient being's joy in desires? Those obtained through various efforts and intense pursuits will be destroyed in an instant, like enjoyment in a dream, in those things, who is the sentient being's joy in desires? Those things that are accomplished, increased, and fully protected do not lead to happiness, like a heavy fire pit, in those things, who is the sentient being's joy in desires? The fierce, blinding, destructive, and punitive, for them, bad reputations will decline, like burnt wood, in those things, who is the possessor's joy in desires? The Asura's beautiful giver and the near relative's beautiful giver, for them, they become enemies and decline, having been friends, they ultimately separate, in those things, who is the sentient being's joy in desires? For those things, people throw their bodies into water, fire, and the mouths of flesh-eaters, in those non-virtuous things that become enemies, who is the sentient being's joy in desires? For the sake of friendless desires, people become miserly, suffering killing and bondage, etc., for the sake of desires, the mind is a miserly ascetic, in the living world, one goes to bondage and fatigue. To kill wild animals, they entice them with songs, for the sake of form, millers offer fire oblations, seeking flesh, fish eat iron hooks, therefore, places fruitlessly bear fruit. Who thinks this is the enjoyment of desires? Some completely enjoy these enjoyments, clothes and other items of...

Therefore, in this world, it should be understood as being for the purpose of pacifying suffering. Just as water is desired to thoroughly quench thirst, similarly, food is needed to eliminate hunger. Houses are for shielding wind and dust, and clothing is for concealing shame and cold. Likewise, a dwelling is for completely destroying afflictions, and a vehicle is for relieving fatigue on the road. Similarly, a cushion is for thoroughly purifying the dwelling, and bathing is for cleanliness, health, and relying on strength. It exists for the purpose of completely pacifying suffering, and not for the enjoyment of beings. A wise person who enters the ritual of complete tranquility, who would acknowledge enjoyment as food? Those who are tormented by the suffering of walking strive for cold actions, considering them as enjoyment. Entering into the nature of pacifying suffering, therefore, one perceives enjoyment in desires. Because there is no complete attachment to desires, therefore, I do not have a perception of enjoyment in them. Whatever thing itself brings happiness, that same thing can also bring suffering again. Heavy clothing and light clothing, in times of cold and warmth, bring happiness and unhappiness. Moonlight and sandalwood, when it is warm, are for happiness, and when it is cold, are for suffering. Because of gain and non-gain, etc., everything in the world is immersed in duality. Therefore, there is no complete happiness, and some people on earth do not have complete suffering. Seeing happiness and suffering intertwined, I consider the throne and slavery to be equal. The king is not always happy, and the slave is not always suffering. Because commands become more prominent when not governing, therefore, the suffering of the king is great. The king is like a tree that is completely relied upon, completely falling into fatigue from the root of existence. Possessing the throne but abandoning it, not governing many unfriendly people, if one trusts them, one will decline. If one does not trust them, then this place is full of fear.
