And like it, it has not been seen. To fetch firewood, the Brahmins went, With clean hands full of flowers and leaves, Even though the chief ascetics made intentions, Having seen it depart, they made no sound. Having seen it like a blue water treasure, the peacocks, Rejoicing, bent upwards, Uttering pure sounds, The variegated mountain deer, the virtuous ones, and the deer, Abandoning their grains, Stood facing it directly. Like the rising of the radiant sun, Having seen that lamp of the sugarcane kind, Even though the sacrificial milk was squeezed out, Great joy arose, And it flowed forth abundantly. Is this the eighth of the wealth-givers? Or has one of the stars departed? Having seen it, a wondrous thought arose, The words of the Victorious Ones were proclaimed loudly. Like the second body of the host of gods, Like the essence of the world and human life, Like the sun setting as desired, It illuminated the entirety of the forest. Then, those of the lineage who are happy, Listened closely as it was, And made offerings and prostrations, It, with a voice like a cloud with water, Again offered to the Dharma-holders. Then, that steadfast one who desired liberation, Certainly observed the various austerities, By the person who had done meritorious deeds desiring heaven, In that place of pervasive austerity, He followed, observed, and pondered. In that forest of austerity of the wealthy ascetics, The various ascetics, From their fixed abodes, To some of the ascetics who followed, Peacefully, desiring to understand it, he spoke thus: Why is it that this ritual of Dharma, I have seen this place of austerity for the first time today, Therefore, you should not speak to me, What is the definite understanding that enters into what? Then, that twice-born one who wandered in various austerities, The chief of the Shakyas, the one who subdued the hosts, To him, in order, the various distinctions of austerity, And together with the fruits of austerity, He spoke words and made this speech. Not food produced in villages

Born well in the lotus, leaves, water, and fruit are the very roots. The conduct of the capable ones is as the scriptures say. The various thoughts of ascetics are different. Some, like mountain deer, enjoy grasses. Others, by abandoning, live like birds moving in the sky. Some live together with those who go by hand. Those who have become anthills are in the forest by the wind. Others' conduct is to strive diligently with stones. Some take and eat with their own teeth. Likewise, others, having prepared for the sake of others, if there is a remainder, they act. Some with matted hair moistened by water, with secret mantras preceding, twice offer burnt offerings to the fire. Some, like fish, enter the water. Like turtles, they shrink their bodies completely. Thus, the best of the accumulated ascetic forest assemblies go to the heavens, others to the human world, because ease is easily attained through the path of suffering, and it is said that ease itself is the root of the Dharma. Thus, the son of the two-legged sovereign, having heard the words of that wealthy ascetic, though not seeing him, was not satisfied, and this, having become his own, was spoken slowly. The nature of suffering is manifold asceticism. The fruit of asceticism is primarily the heavenly realm. All worlds are subject to change, and this slight weariness is for those who suffer. Having abandoned loved ones, relatives, and homelands, whoever practices for the sake of the heavens, those who have separated and definitely want to go, are still a very great bondage. By the actions of bodily fatigue and suffering, they want to enter from the cause of desire. Without thinking about the faults of the ocean of samsara, they seek only suffering through suffering. Beings are always afraid of death, and with effort, they want to enter again. If they have entered, they will surely die, and here they fall into what they fear. For this reason, some diligently enter into fatigue, others obtain fatigue for the sake of the heavens, happiness.
