(Question) Again, the Able One (thub pa) acted like a deer, called the Deer Vow (Sanskrit: mṛga vrataṃ). The ministers' sons were all ashamed and thought: This deer is a deer without refuge, this person practicing the Deer Vow (Sanskrit: mṛga vrataḥ) is worthy of reverence, a person without possessions, they boast with piles of bark, sticks, and other implements. After seeing them offering with leaves, all the ministers' sons seriously thought because of shame. In the forest, the deer without refuge, this deer is like the Deer Vow (Sanskrit: mṛga vrataḥ), with piles of clothes and sticks, abandoning these things, they should be offered. For this purpose, they will surely observe us. If we accumulate the articles of the vow (Sanskrit: vrata), perhaps they will also stop us? After thinking like this, they threw all the accumulated articles of the vow (Sanskrit: vrata) into the river. Then, they approached him with pure hearts, those who had abandoned attachment, after understanding his intention and latent habits, they preached the corresponding Dharma to them. The king's son is me, the ministers' sons are the Shakyas. Now I have done this for them. Like this, the story of the Shakya youths was personally told by the Victorious One. Do not hesitate, but revere those who rely on compassion and love. This is the abandonment that is told again. Therefore, the assembly of monks should highly revere his compassion. This is good. In the Bodhisattva Garland of Birth Stories (bodhisattvāvadānakalpalatāyāṃ) composed by Mendrabiracitāyāṃ, the birth story of the mute cripple is the thirty-eighth leaf. May those endowed with wisdom be victorious, may the unchanging radiance illuminate all.

Chapter 38 on Expressing Anger Ends. The burden of stability is like the remnant of the afflicted, Whose patience is the patience of good deeds?

Whoever was the king of detachment in the past, his nature is in all desires, like the moon in the lotus, hating desire. After that, the lord of the north in spring, in order to play with the greedy group of consorts, looked at all the places in the forest, for auspiciousness, on the ground near his residence. The greedy landowner named Contention, while playing, obtained the auspiciousness of the Ashoka tree with beautiful eyes by kicking with the feet of the women and with the wine of their mouths. In that place, the ascetics of all directions, with great anger and frowning eyebrows that destroy asceticism. The faces of those and the smoke of desire fire, like a swarm of bees surrounding, were with darkness. Playing and shaking, the flower clusters drooped, the breasts curved, the red lips were like red tender leaves, the vines played, and were obtained by the women. The king and others, with rare and wonderful illusions, wandered in the forest and saw that hermit. Without moving, focused on meditation and samadhi, liberated from desire, they stayed around. After that, the king appeared in that direction, and saw him surrounded by women. Jealous, angry, and with unbearable fire, he quickly cut off his hands and feet. The severed limbs scattered, without change, the wise and angry king named, stopped him, greatly angered, and offered him incense.
