Who would not be nourished by the great water of generosity that is the field of giving? With the perfection of generosity, the mind of enlightenment arises on the earth. The wise, striving for the sake of sentient beings, gradually cultivate. The Bhagavan who seeks meaning in places, he is the one who knows the truth. A virtuous friend, as spoken by the Sugata. Having manifestly accomplished the assembly of Bodhisattvas, saying "well done," the assembly of people became single-minded in generosity. Thus, not even considering their own suffering. When the Bhagavan became a Bodhisattva, he only performed the deeds of others, thinking in this way, those who always have faith in the Buddha Bhagavan should abide. This is the Jataka of the beneficent one, the tenth Jataka. Summary: The radiant guide is well-spoken, The rabbit seeking meaning gives its head. The milk-giving merchant, and also the fish, The summary of Brahma's giving is likewise oil. Connected with compassion, for the sake of others, Giving up life, desiring it like a root. The minds of those with steadfast minds are also, The great ones are carried into gentleness. Thus it was heard that, just as the lunar eclipse is dissolved by the flowing water, the banks adorned by the pair of male and female Durpa birds, with the collection of water waves stirred by the gentle wind, between the mountains adorned by the water of Varanasi, in some secluded forests where the water is obscured by the shadows of various trees and the green grass makes the ground green, the Bodhisattva became the lord of the deer herd. White like the foam of the ocean of milk, with a slender belly, And a back as black as a swarm of bees. That which looks with a sidelong glance from the edge of the forest, With mingled graceful pupils and delightful eyes, the front is beautiful. Thus, the Bodhisattva, slightly similar in form, complexion, and size to Devadatta, became the master of a herd of deer that was not too large, living in close proximity.

Those masters ate grass and took care of it. Having gotten rid of doubts and exhaled, they enjoyed the pure herds of deer. Then, at some point, having become attached to and accustomed to chasing fleeing deer, a king named Brahma-datta was destined to appear in the city of Vārāṇasī. He was bent over, with his bow firmly against his chest, riding a fine horse, and followed by people like himself. The dust from the hooves of the horses made the eyelashes dusty, and the droplets of dust, born from the heat of the day, pressed down on all sides of the forehead. The sound of the army frightened the peacocks, partridges, francolins, and other birds, who flew into the sky in flocks, as well as domestic birds. The ground was uneven, with high and low places, and in some places, the feet of pedestrians and the hooves of deer were arranged in a wondrous and elaborate manner. The waters along the banks of the rivers were frequented by schools of fish. Intoxicated elephants, rubbing their foreheads against the trunks of trees, caused mad liquid to splash everywhere, along with its scent. Swarms of honey-making bees surrounded the trees. Dried mushrooms and eye fruits clung to the branches of the trees on the banks, as well as Byākaraṇḍa, and Kasha grass mixed with peacock tail feathers, Kuśa grass, reed stalks, and leaves. These sights marked the mountains and rivers that had passed for a long time. The edges of the ponds were especially marked with the tracks of tigers. The scent of ripe Udumbaras made the thickets fragrant. The bellies of the animals, swaying like thin veils moved by the wind, marked the dusty roads. In the depths of the forest, they were vaguely visible and paused briefly. Those two herds of deer, breathing and resting, were surrounded by the army. Then, they saw the drawn bows of the army, and the sound coming from the movement, and those helpless herds scattered in all directions.

Due to the power of fear, the deer scattered in all directions. Even seeing the deer circling around. The immovable army, that Bodhisattva. From afar, he draws out the sharpened arrow. The ruler of the land came there and began to speak. Why do you suddenly want to eliminate all the deer? Why have you prepared this bow with arrows? In your black nest, you who act during the day. I will send the deer one by one. Then, the lord of the land said to him: If the matter of the deer is true, then do so. If this arrangement is not carried out, Then, I will strike the deer again. Then, he agreed, and the ruler of the land departed. The white umbrella shielded the sun's heat. Those deer became one again. Coming there, the Bodhisattva said: When fear suddenly comes from all directions, If the order is obtained again, that will be sacred. If the cause of long-lasting peace is gradually obtained, When will the so-called "other" arise? Skilled at splitting the elephant's forehead. Also hating the powerful maned ones. The human kings end lives with arrows, What need is there to mention deer eating kusha grass tips in the forest? Like a white jewel, with pure light, Dispelling darkness, illuminating the world, the rabbit. The light is gone, falling from the western mountain, All things are destroyed in an instant. Possessing great waves, the water violently churns, From the sea, the son who tames the serpent brings it out. Who can transcend the mastery of karma? The maturation achieved by actions, even by the wise, Who can transcend the fame of that power? Having thus known the workings of karma, The wise are clear about knowledge. Even giving up life, labor, The steadfast mind remains firm and unmoving. Then, by the command of the two lords of the deer herds, one deer was sent each day from those herds to be cooked as food for the king.
