Having thought in this way, (he) appeared like a wild deer. (He) was there, when the birds came, using continuous calls to create fear. His flesh would be eaten all at once, but (this) had no effect on the steadfastness of his mind. Afterwards, his body emitted the fragrance of virtue-flowers, the beings abandoned him in every way, like a tree covered in suffering, the place where birds fall. Then, like a bee enjoying itself from a very far distance from the peak of the mountain of power, now after the lord of the white stars (moon) has left, when the night has passed, like the tip of a flower of recitation, the sun's face is closely connected to the peak of the eastern mountain, when the sun is there, like the pleasure of the arms of the daylight rays completely touching, the thorns on the radiant lotus stems make the (lotus) hair stand on end, there are lotus women without sleep, (there) are city gates and latches that have been liberated, imitating the sounds of the living Kuraara, (they) wake up from sleep, the Bodhisattva is distressed in his heart by unpleasant doubts, together with friends and retinue, and the group of relatives and kin, distracted by searching for his son, thinking of this and that. (They think) My son wandered all night, was he bitten by a snake? Or was he robbed of his ornaments and killed by those who lure separately without compassion? Or was he struck in the chest by the fangs of the lord of the earth (lion) and died? Or did he break the pillar of bondage and go to the city of Yama? (The Bodhisattva) gradually weakened, in a corner of the cemetery, vultures were cutting his flesh, whichever Bodhisattva appeared, that person spoke to the merchant: Alas, this great man is close to death, just as he thinks, he will surely give himself to the animals. Having heard this, that merchant fell down like a tree felled by the enemy's axe, for a very long time.

Thus, people who individually generate consciousness become single-mindedly focused on uttering cries of lament. This body of mine is being cut by birds. Having clearly seen the loosening of the decaying connections in this way, alas, due to the great offense against the gods, even so, I, who possess coarse thoughts, still live. The respect of domestic animals is like this. If one's own body is illuminated by giving, then one completely abandons the sinless fathers. How could you initiate such a merciless act? Soft and comfortable bedding, captivating the mind, covered with white blankets, having slept comfortably. Today, here, completely covered with bones, filled with ashes, how do you lie on this empty ground? Today, you have gone to heaven, possessing compassionate friends, people desire to see you, yet you do not consider your own comfort. With words of holy virtues, with flowers as offerings, with words of offering, I have heard those gatherings that captivate the mind. You pour on me the water of the dead, mixed with tears, thinking, "Desiring to see, transformed into giving," if the gentle sage knows these with a moistened heart, then why do women so easily discourage my heart? In this way, the merchant uttered cries of lament for a long time, and then cremated the body of the Bodhisattva, anointing it with the tears that constantly dripped from his eyes, with a face like emptiness, accompanied by the sound of lamentation, he returned to his own home. Then, from the caves on each side of Mount Meru, great sounds arose. Striking golden bells, large drums, and small drums. The hosts of gods, for the fire of Nirvana, showered fragrant rain of flowers upon the heap of the Bodhisattva's bones. Thus, that Bhagavan acted with the conduct of a Bodhisattva, and having repeatedly given himself for the sake of others, having contemplated in this way, one should generate supreme faith in the Buddha Bhagavan. This is the Jataka tale of the merchant, that is, the seventh Jataka tale. In order to perfectly accomplish the benefit of others, the Bodhisattva abandoned his body like grass.

Those stable dharmas that accomplish happiness for the inferior do not depend on their own happiness. Thus it is heard that, like the moon in the autumn sky where clouds have dispersed, in the night illuminated by the rays of the complete circle of the rabbit-bearer, like the opening of a multitude of lotuses, like the birthplace of lotuses on the ground of an intoxicated forest, like the tameness of perfect youth, like the meaning of speech endowed with clear and gentle words, like the long passing of the autumn moon, like the depths pervaded by clear schools of fish possessing immaculate water, adorned by the streams of water called Varanasi, which possess a multitude of thick and thin rows of swans made yellow all around by the pollen of the flowers of the trees on the banks, in the royal palace of Varanasi, which is virtuous by nature, a Bodhisattva king named Lotus-Faced arose, manifestly adorned by the illumination of the rays of the jewels of the extended teeth. Beauty, form, and splendor, happiness and delusion, are the cause of suffering. The rabbit mark, the flower weapon, and the warm light, which one, when diminished, immediately conquers. For those who travel in the sky, possessing fruits, like the multitude of ruins in a lotus forest. For those who have become friends to the solitary travelers, in whom happiness arises like a friend. For the sake of beings, easy to accomplish, possessing the nature of true diligence, completely holding with compassion and possessing pure wisdom, in whose heart stinginess has never entered, the snake of the house is protected by mantras. Whose great thought, with extremely famous generosity, has completely repelled stinginess and pervaded all directions. The words "give" are never again heard from the mouths of beggars by worldly people, making them small. Flowing from the snowy mountain of the heart, generosity enters from the level ground, completely removing dust and washing the entire world. Who is worshiped by all lands, solely for the benefit of others.
